Seeker has to practice discrimination between the subjects and object, and renounce the object

In waking experience everything is subject to change, yet everything is covered by the consciousness.  Seeker has to practice discrimination between the subjects and object, and renounce the object and he has to be strong in his conviction that waking entity is not the self but the soul or the consciousness is the true self.

This waking   is constantly changing it becomes deep sleep and it again becomes dream. Man exits within the world and the world exists within the waking or dream. But that which sustains the three states is never changes. It is always the same. That is, the formless soul or consciousness is the formless substance and witness of the three states. On soul or consciousness everything rests. It is like a movie projected on a screen. The movie changes but the screen is constant. Similarly, the waking or dream is projected on the formless soul or consciousness.

Waking or dream is a mere mirage. The mirage has no independent existence. It exists because of its substance from which it is created out of, and it ceases to exist as soon as a one becomes aware of the substance. The Mirage then dissolves into the substance from which it is created out of. In the same way, when one knows the formless soul or  consciousness as the innermost self , the three states merges in merges into it and one realize that subject and object are one in essence.

To attain self- knowledge is the goal of truth seeker. The three states then cannot taint the true self. Ataman’s contact with it is merely like that of a piece of sandalwood, which has long been under water and has thereby come to acquire a bad odour. For a while the fragrance of the sandalwood is suppressed and the bad odour prevails. But if the sandalwood is rubbed a little, the bad odour disappears and the natural fragrance of the sandalwood becomes predominant. Similarly, soul or consciousness’s attachment to the three states is temporary. It cannot be permanent.

One has to realize the soul or consciousness as the innermost self to realize all the three states are one in essence. Therefore, there is no second thing exists other than consciousness the innermost self.   –FORMLESS PATH

As long as there is the sense of "I' and "mine' within us, there can be no Self-knowledge

Dear Sriram,
Ish Upanishad says:-
10/11/12

Those people who have neglected the attainment of Self-knowledge and have thus committed suicide, as it were, are doomed to enter those worlds after death.

This is a condemnation of people who do not try to attain Self-knowledge. They are, in a real sense, committing suicide, for what can be worse than being a slave to sense enjoyment, completely oblivious of the real purpose of life, which is to be your own master? In order to be your own master you have to realize that you are identical with Atman, the true Self, that you are Pure Consciousness, ever free, without name and form, and unconditioned.

You are not subject to any modification, without beginning and end, beyond thought and speech. You are Existence Absolute, Knowledge Absolute, Bliss Absolute. When you know this you are free. You no longer swing between birth and death. If you do not try to know who you really are, you are indeed committing suicide. You are inviting the ignominy of a slave's life in this world and a similarly unfortunate fate after death. , the Self, is one without a second, complete in itself. It never moves. It is always still, always the same, yet it moves faster than the mind. It is the power that moves everything, and it makes the whole world go the way it does. It gives

Those who mechanically perform sacrifices [avidya] go into darkness that is like being blind. But those who merely worship gods and goddesses [vidya] go into a deeper darkness. [IX]

"Blinding darkness' here implies ignorance. And those who worship gods and goddesses go into a deeper darkness because they seek rewards for their worship. As long as there is the sense of "I' and "mine' within us, there can be no Self-knowledge. When you say "me' and "mine' you automatically identify yourself with your body-mind complex. This shows that you are ignorant of your real Self, which is Pure Consciousness and which is also the Self of all. The sign of an ignorant person is in the way he uses the words "I' and "mine'. He says: "I am so and so. I own this much property,' and so on.

An ignorant person has many desires in his mind, and because of these desires he is born again and again. He has to have a body; otherwise he cannot satisfy his desires. But the more he tries to satisfy them, the more they grip his mind. This goes on endlessly. But it is given to a human being to think, reason, and discriminate. Thus he soon comes to realize that the path he has been following cannot give him peace of mind. He understands that he has to choose another path the path of renunciation. As long as he does not practice renunciation, he gropes in the dark like a blind man and he suffers.

There are two types of such people who grope in the dark. One type worships avidya (ignorance) that is, they mechanically perform the prescribed sacrifices without any thought as to why they are doing them. No wonder they grope in the dark. They are doomed unless someday the truth dawns on them that to save themselves they must seek Self-knowledge.

Worse, however, is the situation of the other type those who worship vidya. The word vidya ¸ usually means "knowledge', but here it is used to mean "gods and goddesses'. Some people worship gods and goddesses so that they may someday attain the same status. They may get their desire fulfilled, but this will only delay their liberation. That is why the Upanisad says that they will be in deeper darkness.

Scholars say that the path of avidya [performing aganihotra and other sacrifices] and the path of vidya [worshipping gods and goddesses] produce different results. Wise men confirm this. [X]

Vidya and avidya both are hindrances to Self-knowledge, but vidya is even worse than avidya. The word vidya is used here in a special sense; here it means worshiping gods and goddesses. By worshiping gods and goddesses you will go after death to the world of gods and goddesses.

But will that help you? The time you spend there is wasted, because if you were not there you could have spent that time moving forward towards Self-knowledge, which is your goal. In the world of gods and goddesses you cannot do that, and thus you go deeper and deeper into darkness.

Avidya is karma and therefore a hindrance. You perform avidya - i.e., you perform Agnihotra and other sacrifices. This is a roundabout way of purifying the mind, and it is also groping in the dark. But it may not have as heavy a toll on your time and energy as the other.

To overcome the ignorance one has to inquire, analyze and reason. Until one believes in karma theory, he will remain ignorance. Until ignorance is there, he will remain experiencing illusion as reality.  Until illusion is there, he will remain ignorant of the fact that, the cycle birth, life and death are mere mirage.  Therefore, it is not possible for one to accept the fact that, world is illusion, unless and until he becomes aware of the fact that the physical body [I] is not the self, but the soul/Atman, is the true self.  Therefore, for those who believe the body as self, and refuse to accept the soul/Atman  as true self, find the law of karma as universal law and very sacred, because they have accepted their birth, life and death as reality without verifying  the validity of their  accepted truth.

Thus instead of indulging in the scriptural path, it is better to follow F.S which helps the seeker to enter the inner realm. And as his inquiry matures, he will be able to realize the fact that, the karma was reality only on the false base, within the false experience, the formless witness of the false experience [waking/dream] is Atman and Atman is the true self. And he will be able to understand the real meaning of the illusion.

With respect and regards
Santthosh.

It is no use arguing Buddha is wrong or Sri Sankara is right, but where we are going wrong in our understanding the non-dual truth, propagated by the great sages of the past.

Dear B,
Pranams,
Thank you for your response and wisdom.

The matter of discussion is not directed to question any one’s personal path and practice or belief.  As fellow seekers of truth I am interacting with the list mates, I am not advocating others to accept my views or imposing my ideas on others. I humbly request the list mates to ignore my views if it is not suiting their mind set.   I am not a follower of Osho or any physical guru, and I believe that the self, itself is the true guru. Since spiritual path is a very personal path, and seeker of truth has to share his views and listen what others say and discusses with the fellow seekers and moves a head in his chosen path.

It is no use arguing Buddha is wrong or Sri Sankara is right, but where we are going wrong in our understanding the non-dual truth, propagated by the great sages of the past.  Some say, that without the sunyvada, Advaita philosophy could not have come into existence; Because Advaith starts from where sunyavada ends.  That is why they say it is extension of Buddhism.  If Advaith existed prior to Buddha, he would not have advocated sunyavada at all because Advaith is final and ultimate truth.

Since the Buddhist and Vedic  scriptures have been passed down by hearing. They were written down only relatively late. So one wouldn’t know whether to rely on the times they give. Also, a lot depends on the translation. Each 'Shloka' or sutta is open to many layers of interpretation.

As per the religious archeologists view: the date of Sankara may be taken most correctly as that of the 9th century. Some claims are made in India that he lived two thousand years ago, but there is absolutely no proof for this claim.  They do not go back farther than the 12th century A.D. and that all so-called evidences for Sankara having lived two centuries before Christ are either were conjectures or Pundit's fabrication.

Regarding the question of Sankara's death, one may dismiss the legend that he did not die, at the age of 32 but disappeared into a cave. This is another Pundit's story which is quite unfounded. He did really die in the Himalayas at that age.

As one go in to the annals of the history, one becomes aware of the fact that; the spiritual Advaita is mixed up with punditry.  Therefore there is a need to do his own research in order to know the true essence of Advaith propounded  by Sri,Sankara and Sri, Gudapada and emptiness of Buddha .

How it was possible for Sri, Sankara to have written so many books during such a short term of existence. The fact is that he wrote very few books. Those actually written by him were Commentaries on Brahma Sutras and the Upanishads and on the Gita. All other books ascribed to him were not written down by his own hand.

They are merely collections of notes recorded by his disciples from his sayings, talks and discussions. Fourthly Sri, Sankara's own Guru was named Sri, Govinda and he lived near Indore. When Sri,Sankara wrote his commentary on the Mandukya his guru was so pleased with it that he took his disciple  to the Himalayas to visit his own Sri, Guru who was named Sri, Goudapada. Only when the latter agreed that the commentary was perfect did Sri, Govinda release his disciple to start his own mission of teaching.

Sri, Sankara wrote his Mandukya commentary first, and then as this revealed that he thoroughly understood the subject, his gurus requested him to write the commentary on Badarayana's Brahma Sutras, which was a popular theological work universally studied throughout India. That is why his commentary is written from a lower dualistic point, for those who cannot rise higher, save that here and there Sri,  Sankara occasionally has strewn a few truly Advaitic sentences.

Sri,Sankara had only four fully trained disciples, although he advised some kings. His doctrines spread after his lifetime. His books were dictated to secretaries as he traveled. So few therefore were capable of understanding his philosophy.

Nearly all Bengal thinkers hold views of Maya which are entirely incorrect and untenable. They do not know Sri, Sankara's Upanishad Bashyas, but only the Brahma Sutra Bashya. Sri, Sankara wrote his Mandukya commentary on a beautifully situated island called Omkaresvar, border of Indore State, where Cauvery and Narbadha rivers meet. On this island there is also a tomb of Sri,Govinda, his guru.

Sankara varied his practical advice and doctrinal teaching according to the people he was amongst. He never told them to give their particular religion or beliefs or metaphysics completely; he only told them to give up the worst features of abuse: at the same time he showed just one step forward towards the truth.

In Brahma Sutras Sankara says that Brahman is the cause of the world, whereas in Mandukya he denies it. This is because he says that at the lower stage of understanding, the former teaching must be given, for people will get frightened as they cannot understand how the world can be without a cause, but to those in a higher stage, the truth of non-causality can be revealed.

Brahma Sutras, i.e. "Vedanta Sutras" by Badarayana, are intended for those of middling intellects, not for those who have the best brains: it is a semi-theological, semi-philosophical work; it starts with the assumption that Brahman exists.

The opening sentence is "All this is Brahman.” But nobody knows or has seen Brahman. If we say "All this is wood" and show a piece of wood, the words are understandable. Suppose you have never seen wood. Then what is the use of such a sentence? It becomes meaningless when the object indicated is seen by none. Hence the Brahma Sutra opening is equivalent to "All this is 0". Both have no meaning so long as they are not understood, if we take them as the data to start from.  The books is intended for theological minds, because it begins with dogma although its reasoning is close. For it starts with something imagined.

A man who describes Sankara's philosophy as negative (because of his Neti, Neti) does not know that this is applied only to the world of the Seen, the critic ignorantly believes that it is also applied to the  Seer or witness.

One should  never negate the witness, only the witnessed. Scriptural mastery is not wisdom.

As one goes deeper in the subject one becomes aware of the fact that the religion, scriptures and concept of god is nothing to do with spiritual  side of Advaita, the present religious based Advitic knowledge and theories is meant for the mass, who hold the religion as high, not the truth, because religion is based on the form [body/I] and they view and judge and argue on the base of body [I] as self,  but spiritual Advaita is based on the formless [soul] and it negates everything other then the soul.

Therefore as Raman said:   All the conceptual divisions invented by teachers of philosophy by their excessive analysis. Where do all these concepts end? Why should confusion created and then explained away? Fortunate is the man who does not lose him self in the labyrinths of philosophy, but goes straight to the source from which they all arise.   It is better follow the direct path of Ramana, instead of going all around and coming to same point [soul or consciousness].

With respect and regards
Santthosh

The pursuit of truth is very personal journey. The self is nothing to do with the individual life because ups and down of life is mere illusion. The burden and bondage of life within the dream becomes unreal when waking takes place, similarly one is not affected by the suffering of the world when the self becomes aware of the fact that, it is neither waking entity nor the dream entity. Realizing the ultimate truth will not bring remedy for our present situation in our practical life within the practical world but it definitely brings freedom from experiencing the illusory practical life with the practical world as reality.

A Gnani may go in silent mode and say nothing because he knows his body; ego and his experience of the world and the person who is questioning him are also as consciousness. Thus for him the forms and names are mere illusion created out of consciousness. And he has becomes one with the nature of the true self, which is non-dual silence.

The physical existence is reality on the base of physical self. Whatever one feels as a person is reality within the physical existence. If physical existence is taken as reality then there is no meaning in seeking truth because he has accepted the physical existence as truth. Once physical existence is accepted as reality then the experiences within the physical existence prevail as reality.

My point is we have to view our life from ultimate point of view, then only we become aware its illusory nature.

The nature of things necessarily unpreventable and uncontrollable when one regards world as world of diversity. Only when one is able to base his-self from ultimate standpoint and views the experience of diversity [mind] as consciousness only, then he becomes aware of their unreal nature of the physical existence or mind.

One, who has realized that existence and non-existence and change are in the nature of things, easily finds repose, being unperturbed and free from ignorance. The pain and pleasure exist as reality because of having the idea of two [duality]. To get rid of the reality of the pain and pleasure one has to find the formless substance of the duality [mind] to realize the whole diversity is created out of single substance, which is consciousness. Realizing the consciousness as ultimate truth, one becomes aware of the unreal nature of the mind, which appears as waking or dream [duality] and disappears as deep sleep [non-duality].

Serious Seekers who desirous to know the truth, for them nothing brings contentment other than acquiring the self-knowledge. For one who becomes aware of the fact that, the self is not physical but consciousness becomes aware of the fact that, the physical existence [illusion] has no base, and its reality is in illusory in its nature.

Our individual life is nothing to do with ultimate truth. The individual life is reality within the waking or dream. The three states are mere illusion on the ultimate standpoint. The ultimate truth, which is consciousness, is the substance and witness of the illusion and it is within the illusion and it is always apart and eternal.
As person perceiving the world one thinks he is born in this world and world existed prior to him, this conviction makes him physical oriented, thus he views and judges the worldview on the physical base therefore his understanding is limited to the physicality.

Deeper inquiry reveals the fact that, the self is not physical but it is formless [consciousness]. On the base of formless [consciousness] as self, one becomes unreal nature of the mind, which appears as waking or dream. Thus, the waking is as unreal as dream.

When man his world are within the illusion and all his experiences are happenings within the illusion. Until one thinks the physical self as real self, he is bound to be in the realm of duality. The one which knows itself as body with the name is not the body but it is consciousness. When the consciousness withdraws itself then there is neither body, nor the name, nor the world exists. And consciousness alone prevails as nondual existence.

Where is the body, where is mind, where is the world; the void; or despair in the true self, which the taintless soul or consciousness. They are or have becomes consciousness.

One thinks there is mind when he has thoughts, but when thoughts are not considered different from the consciousness, which is the true self, then where is the division into, waking, dream and deep sleep etc.
Void implies to duality: the universe may not exist but the thought of the second is there. If one knows there is Void [emptiness/nothingness], then there is something there to be known and know. They are or have become consciousness.

What are scriptures, what is self-knowledge, what is mind without the objects, what is contentment, and where is desirelessness for the formless soul/true self, which is ever devoid of sense of duality.

What is knowledge? What is ignorance? What is the ego? What is duality? What is mind? What is bondage? What is liberation? What is definableness to the formless self/soul, which is in the form of consciousness?

All these appearances are mere mirage, which come and go; hence meaningless to the formless soul/true self.

The ego based knowledge is not ultimate knowledge because ego based knowledge is dualistic knowledge based on the object [body] as subject. But in non-dualistic Knowledge whatever seems to exist also is consciousness; therefore there is no scope for the existence of the second thing.

What is past karmas? What is liberation –in this life? and what is that liberation at death? for the birth- less soul, which is ever formless.

Nearest state to understand the soul by itself is to eliminate mentally waking and dream as in deep sleep. Once this is grasped one has to understand everything is consciousness, which is the true self.

What is the doer or the enjoyer? What is cessation of thoughts or rising of thoughts? What is immediate perception and its result to, the formless soul, which is ever impersonal. A Gnani is the one who is never afraid of thinking and knowing all his individual experience and the world to be consciousness.

What is the world and what is meant by the aspirant for liberation; what is contemplative and what is man of knowledge; what the self is and what liberated self to the formless soul, which is the non-dual essence.

When we analyze the dream experience we find the dream entity, dream world with all people in it appeared as a whole, and the dream reality lasted until waking experience appeared. When one tries to know the truth of his true existence in waking through inquiry, analysis and reasoning, one becomes aware of the fact that, the self is not physical but it is formless soul, which is in the form of consciousness which is the essence of the three states from which the three states are made. Thus the illusions of the three states are made of one single substance, which is consciousness. By realizing the formless substance, which is consciousness as self, the ignorance vanishes and one become aware of the fact that the three states are mere illusion on the standpoint of the formless substance ,which is also the witness of the three states.

When knows the soul as the true self:-
What are projection and retraction, what are end and means; what are failure and success to the formless soul, which is formless and non-dual in its nature. The mirage appears and merges back into its essence is not an appearance at all.
What is the knower, the means of knowledge, the object of knowledge; what is anything or nothing to the soul which is ever formless. Knower, knowledge, object, thing, nothing or any word one may utter is after all they are the words and words have meaning only within the mirage. The consciousness is ever present in all the three states but as a person, one is unconscious of the consciousness because he thinks the body as his self.

When all knowing, known and knower are simultaneously mental as in dream what else is there to trouble about understanding them. Because of considering the waking experience as reality one is incapable of understanding and assimilating the non-dual truth.

What is the distraction? What is the concentration, dullness ad delusion, happiness and sorrow to the formless soul, which is ever actionless.
As a person one may be drawn to observe his body and the world, but the Gnani is not disturbed by because they all are consciousness to him.

The physical attributes are nothing to do with the soul/self wrongly; all the attributes belong to the ego not the soul. Identifying the physical attribute to the soul is the cause of the ignorance.

What is relative? What is absolute happiness and misery to the formless soul, which is ever devoid of thought and activity?

If anything has a meaning it is only in duality. Happiness and sorrow are the nature of duality, which is mind, their differences therefore illusory on the standpoint of the formless soul, which is ultimate reality.

What is illusion? What is ignorance? What are birth, life and death? What is world? What is attachment and what is detachment to the soul/self, which is ever formless.

The mind and soul are one in essence ultimately. All argument about consciousness never touches it. The soul is not the ego in this particular body but principle which holds the whole physical existence [universe], which contains everyone and everything known and unknown. All words have no place and thoughts cannot reach. Even the thought of the soul or consciousness is just illusory and contradictory, because the thought and words belong to the world of duality.

What is activity or inactivity, liberation and bondage to the formless soul/self, which is ever immutable and indivisible. There is no division into nations, races and colours of kinds of men in wisdom. It is not enough to but one must always see the formless soul [consciousness] as self and the witness the witness of all the three states and always realize and practice it. Some people get glimpses of truth and lose it; so it must be established. Such fixidity is the goal.

What is instruction and scriptural injunction? What is disciple and guru? What indeed is object of life for the formless soul, which is absolute and free from limitation?

Life is with world. World is within the waking or dream, the illusory limitation. When there is no second other than consciousness, then what is there for the soul /self to attain? But when one thinks the self is physical, then there is various things he will want to get and so be trouble by their lack. Hence don’t wrongly imagine the self to be the body.

What is existence, nonexistence, unity or duality? What need us there to say more? Noting from the soul because whatever seems to emanate from it, is non-different from itself. There is no second thing other than the soul, which is in the form of consciousness. One should not mistake self [soul] for the ego.
Those who assert world is reality, are still in elementary stages of preliminary analysis. The world is reality within the waking experience but the waking experience is mere illusion. The same way the dream world was reality within the dream experience. The dream became unreal when waking took place same way waking becomes unreal when non-dual wisdom dawns.

Dear Pete, Very kind of you. Yes, it says nothing in non-dual reality but every word has meaning in duality , because duality is state of ignorance. Even the form, time and space is nothing but consciousness.Just by using language without words by using words, one cannot get rid of the ignorance, because the words are used within the scope form, time and space. Until form, time and space remains as reality, the words will remain as communicative tool. Thus people who have mastered the language without words are free to use it without using any words. I respect your views and wisdom.

The dream became unreal when waking took place same way waking becomes unreal when non-dual wisdom dawns
