The witness is the Soul, which is in the form of consciousness.

The Inquiry and Reasoning reveals:-

The witness is  the Soul, which is in the form of consciousness. Without the Soul or consciousness the three states cease to exist. Therefore, Soul or consciousness  itself is the formless substance and witness of the three states.

On the standpoint of Soul/Spirit, the three states are non-existent. Since Soul is formless and non-dual in its nature. In waking and dream the self becomes ignorant of its own non-dual nature and it experiences the duality as reality.

The fact that ‘Self’ is not the physical and analyzing the three states on the base of physical self creates the ignorance and leads the seeker towards imagination or intellectuality. Intellectuality is mere speculation derived on the base of physical self.

The physical self is present only in Waking or dream.

The inquiry and reasoning reveals that:-

The three states are not the experience of the physical self. The physical self is present only in Waking or dream. Dream is parallel Waking, and waking e is parallel dream. Therefore, the dream is not witnessed by the physical self. Because the waking world and the waking entity are absent in dream. There is neither dream nor waking experience in deep sleep. The one that is aware of these three states is not the physical self but it is the spirit. The waking entity is present only in Waking, and dream entity in dream in deep sleep there is no entity.  Therefore, the one which is aware of the three states is not physical but it is formless.

The physical body itself is not the experience of the physical body but it is only an experience with in the experience of waking or dream. The dream world is unreal and it disappears when the waking world appears. Even waking becomes unreal   when one becomes aware of the fact that the self is not physical but it is the spirit.  Therefore viewing judging the worldview and coming to conclusion and accepting it as truth on the physical point of view is erroneous.

The witness can remain with or without the dream or waking experiences.

The Inquiry and Reasoning reveals that:
The dream or Waking experiences are absent, in deep sleep.  The witness can remain with or without the dream or waking experiences.
The deep sleep experience proves that the witness can remain without the experience of duality.  Therefore, one can come to firm conclusion to get the conviction that the witness is formless and apart.
One  has to hold on to the formless  witness, which is the soul, as Self and  learn to view and judge the worldview on the base of soul as self to realize the fact that  waking experience also unreal similar to the dream.

What sees various objects, scenes and persons during the dreams without the physical apparatus?

Only through deeper inquiry, analysis and reasoning one becomes aware of the fact that, the formless substance and witness of the mind is the true self.

Only through inquiry, analysis and reasoning on the true base the truth will start unfolding.

v   What sees various objects, scenes and persons during the dreams without the physical apparatus?

v  If the dream world was without the witness, it is impossible to witness it. Then what witnessed the dream as a whole, if ‘the witness of the dream is not the physical?

Therefore, one has to come to firm conclusion and then conviction through inquiry and reasoning.

The one that witnesses the dream as a whole is also witnesses the Waking experience as a whole, it is also aware of the deep sleep experience. But it is apart from the three states because it is not an entity or identity within the waking or dream.

Man experiences the world within the mind which appears as waking or dream and disappears as deep sleep.  Therefore the formless witness of the three states is within the three states as their formless substance and it is without the three states as their formless witness.

Only through deeper inquiry, analysis and reasoning on the true base the nondual truth can be grasped and the formless witness can be traced grasped.

If ‘I’ is not the physical body, what is it?

If ‘I’ is not the physical body, what is it?

Since the sense of ‘I’ is present only when the mind is present and it disappears along with mind. The seeker will come to conclusion after thoroughly verifying this fact through inquiry, analysis and reasoning and then come to firm conviction that ‘I’ is mind.

If ‘I’ is mind and in turn mind is experience of duality. The mind, ‘I’, experience of duality, waking or dream are one and the same thing.  Seeker has to identify ‘I’ as mind and “Mind as a waking or dream” and ego as “Seeking Mind” in order to assimilate the self knowledge.  Seeker has to be aware of the fact that, the true self is not “He” or “She” but it is “It”.

It is wrong to identify the self as he or she because it refers to physicality. The self is genderless because it is formless. Identifying “Self” as he or she, leads to all sorts’ of doubts and confusion.  When the self is identified as he or she it becomes physical self /ego.

When the ego is not the self, it is erroneous to judge the truth on the base of ego/physical self and come to some conclusion of finality on the physical base is erroneous because the truth is prior appearance of the physical existence. Thus, the truth has to be judged on the ultimate point of view, not on the base of what appeared later on.

Man has been conditioned to think and be and behave and believe and live as an individual separate from the world. Therefore, the self has been identified with physical body with the name within the waking experience.

The ‘mind’ is the Waking or dream experience. The Waking or dream is not the experience of the physical body but of the Soul/Self. The man and his world are within the mind; therefore mind is not within the brain. This has to be understood to assimilate the self-knowledge. Without understanding this fact the assimilation is impossibility.

The nature of the Self is formless non-dual.  The nature of the mind is duality or diversity. The self is the formless substance of the mind /duality /diversity. Therefore, the whole experience of the diversity created out of single stuff.  Therefore, there is no division in ultimate standpoint is the self ,which in the form of consciousness. Viewing the worldview on the base of the physical self is the cause of division and separation.

When the seekers become aware of the fact that the true self is not physical but the soul, he becomes aware of the fact that the mind is mere illusion.   The one who is ignorant of the true self experiences the duality as reality.

A person perceives the world within the mind.  Absent of mind is absent of waking or dream. Thus waking or dream is mind.

One thinks he is an individual separate from the world within the mind. He is unaware of the fact that the mind is not within his brain, but he and his experience of the world are within the mind.  Thus, he thinks he is born in this world and world existed prior to him. Thus this conviction makes him believe the birth, life and death as reality.  Until this conviction is thee he will   views and judges the worldview on the physical base, which is the cause of ignorance of the fact that, the true self is the soul.

This ignorance of the true self is the main hurdle in pursuit of truth. Therefore, it is very much necessary to rectify the seeking base from physical [form] to spirit [formless] before proceeding further in pursuit of truth.

If the seeking base is not rectified it will lead one towards hallucination. When the mind itself is myth then the man and his experience of the world is bound to be myth. Therefore perfect understanding of the mind will help one to unfold the mystery of the mind.  It is impossible to unfold the truth on the base of false self within the false experience, because the truth is prior to the appearance of the falsehood.  And falsehood creates ignorance.

Seeker has to burn down the ignorance by rectifying the base of reasoning by realizing the fact that self is not physical but it is the spirit.

What is it that experiences or witnesses the Waking state, when the physical body and the world is within the Waking state?

1        How one does comes to know that he exists?

2        Because of what?

3        What is it that experiences or witnesses the Waking state, when the physical body and the world is within the Waking state?

4        If ‘Self’ is not the physical then who witnesses the three states which comes and goes in succession?

5        If the witness is not the physical then what is it that is aware of the experiences of all thee states?

6        What is that I aware of the dual and nondual experiences?

7        Prior to appearance of the experience of duality and disappearance of experience of duality what exists? If nothing exists then what is it that is aware of that nothingness where there is no second thing exists?

8        What is it?

It is very much necessary to inquire the nature of the mind to unfold the mystery of the existence.

Only when the appearance of the mind one becomes aware that he is the person perceiving the world. Physical existence is limited only to the Waking or dream. Mind ceases to exist in deep sleep. The question is prior to appearance of the mind; duality was non-existent only there was non-dual existence.

Only after appearance of the mind, man and his experience of the world are present in it. Therefore,

1        What is it that becomes mind and subsides as soul/sprit?

2        Why the individuality, personality and separateness are only present when the mind is present?

3        Why there are wants, needs, desire, hope pleasure, pain birth, and death only when the mind is present?

4        Why the sense of duality disappears when there is no mind?

Therefore, through investigation is very much necessary to unfold the truth. In preliminary inquiry, one becomes aware of the fact that ‘I’ is not the physical. Therefore, it is erroneous to search the truth on the base of the physical self.  Deeper penetration through inquiry and reasoning is very much necessary to unfold the truth.

The man and his experience of the world are within the waking or dream.

The man and his experience of the world are within the waking or dream. Waking experience disappears as the whole in deep sleep as formless non-dual substance. ‘Ego’ or “physical self is limited only to the Waking or dream. The waking and dream are unreal on the standpoint of soul as self. Everyone experiences the duality as reality because they take the physical self to be the real self. This has to be investigated and verified to understand and assimilate the self-knowledge.

Deep sleep gives the clue to the non-dual experience in which the whole experience of duality is absent. There is no burden and bondage in deep sleep. However in waking experience the burden and bondage, sense of duality and gravity appears.

The physical self is totally absent in deep sleep. The seeker has to analyze the three states through inquiry, analysis and reasoning on the true base, to realize the fact that, the witness of the three states is formless and apart.

Whatever manifested as Waking or ‘dream will arise and subside, like a sunrise and sunset. The desultory manifestation cannot be real, therefore mind/ waking is mere illusion. Man and the world are reality within the waking experience but the waking experience itself is myth. Therefore the physical existence is myth.

The religionists and intellectuals who expound knowledge believe that the world is first and people were born in it afterwards. So long as this conviction is there, they cannot expound the self-knowledge because the waking experience itself is mirage therefore the birth, life, death and world are part of the mirage and has no value in  the realm of the truth.

Only within the Waking or dream the sense of separation is experienced. Prior to appearance of the Waking experience, there was neither the person nor the world. The duality ceases to exist without the waking or dream experience. Only when the Waking or dream appears the person and the world is present. In deep sleep it has subsides and becomes one with the formless substance.

Only in Waking or dream the waking or dream entity is aware of itself and the world. Therefore, seeker has to investigate to overcome the doubts and confusion through by understanding the fact that waking or dream entity are false self within the false experience. The true self is the formless substance and witness of the three states.

Pursuit o truth is not for those who want anything less than truth.

Self –knowledge is meant for those who are in search for the truth  behind   their  existence. In pursuit of truth one need not go detail about the physical body and the world, but one has to know the unreal nature of mind in which the physical body and the world exists. The physical existence is dependent on mind, if mind is there the physical existence is there. Absent of mind is absent of physical existence. Therefore, there is need to understand what is the mind, in pursuit of truth.

The deeper inquiry, analysis and reasoning reveal the fact that the self is not physical but it is the spirit. If self is not physical then what is the use of searching and trying to understand and assimilate the truth on physical base. Therefore there is a need to rectify the reasoning base from physical to the spirit base in order to understand and assimilate the Self-Knowledge. All the doubts and confusion will disappear as one learns to view and judge and reason on the base of the soul which is in the form of consciousness. The soul is the true self.

Reasoning on the base of the soul as self  helps to the self-examine, to test how near to the wisdom  the seeker has approached, what progress has been already been made in this regard and what still remains to be accomplished. It sets a criterion of self-judgment.

The seeker can lead an active life without involving himself in religion, god glorification, or studying scriptures and yogic practice nor indulge in Atheism.

Intense urge for  knowing the truth   through perfect understanding by using reason on the base of the soul/self. It requires natural capacity to understand. Pursuit o truth is not for those who want anything less than truth.

Liberation is not in next life or next world but right here, in this very life, right now in this present experience itself. Seeker may grasp the non-dual truth at any time, at any age if he has matured enough and receptive to receive it.

Mind/’I’ is myth. It appears as waking or dream; the experience within the waking or dream is ever changing with form, shape, color, and activities. Waking or dream experience disappears and becomes absolute and formless and non-dual. The truth of that which becomes dual [form] and non-dual [formless] has to be analyzed to unfold the mystery of the mind.

By Analyzing the three states one becomes aware of the fact that, the witness of the three states is not physical but it is the formless spirit. Inquiry, analysis and Reasoning will lead the Seeking Mind towards the source which the formless witness and substance of the three states. When the Seeking Mind becomes fully aware of the fact that, soul is the formless substance and witness of the mind, which appears as waking or dream and disappears as deep sleep then he becomes aware of the fact that, the mind is mere myth. The soul is the cause of all causes and it itself is uncaused.

Soul is the source from where Mind rises and subsides. Thus, it becomes aware that the mind/’I’ is an illusion on the standpoint of the formless source.

Inquiry and reasoning is not a set of question and answers. It is analyzing every doubt and confusion and solving the doubts by discriminating between the dual and non-dual experiences, and coming to firm conclusion and conviction of the ultimate truth.

The formless witness alone exists when the waking and dream experiences subsides.  The Waking and dream has subsided as deep sleep. The knower of the three states is apart and eternal. The witness is nothing to  do with individual experiences such as birth, life and death, because it is not an entity or identity within the waking or dream.

The witness is within the three states as their formless substance and it is apart from the three states as their formless witness. On the standpoint of the formless substance and witness, the three states are unreal, because the formless substance and witness are one in essence. Hence there is no second thing exists other than the soul/spirit, hence it is non-dual.

In pursuit of truth the guru is not necessary, because the truth is not theoretical

When one becomes aware of the fact that self is not form [body or ego] but formless [consciousness], then whatever believed and worshiped as god has no value.  Whatever known, seen, believed and experienced as person is part of the mirage, which appears as universe or mind.  On the ultimate standpoint the consciousness alone exists therefore the individual gods are non-exiting in reality.  Thus, the universe is unreal and consciousness alone is real, because the universe is mere mirage created out of consciousness on the standpoint of consciousness as self.

Religious or yogic gurus propagate once a seeker identifies a Guru, he must totally surrender to the Guru and then from there onwards, the spiritual journey is fully the Guru's responsibility, not his... Hence the importance to choosing the right Guru is necessary but in pursuit of truth the guru is not necessary, because the truth is not theoretical.  Truth has to be ascertained by the seeker on his own through a well-directed inquiry, analysis and reasoning based on the true self will lead the seeker to his destination.

People who worship the guru as God in human form and there is a danger that they might establish a regular religious sect in his name.  This is an unhappy development of the religious movement.

It is better to take guidance from a Gnani and try to attain the same realization which he had, rather than spend their energies in deifying him. Let us remember that to deify a Gnani is to defy wisdom”.

Intellectually  knowing the truth is mere imagination, whereas realizing the truth knows it as such.

Hindu religious literature is full of such aphorisms as ' there is no higher deity than the Guru; the Guru is the ultimate Truth and Deity God and  Avatars (incarnations) are secondary to the Guru in importance ;there is no higher refuge, no higher target, no higher destination than the Guru ; the Guru is God Himself ; God and the Guru are one ; he who makes a  distinction between the Guru and God is ignorant and stupid ; and scores of  similar others. They abound both in Sanskrit and in modern Indian languages.

People born in the different sect and they remain as its follower. Most of the sect are founded by some gurus, thus Indian belief system is a Guru Cult, i.e. believes in the worship of the Guru as the Supreme Deity.

When a seeker could not get full enlightenment from his inherited belief system, then only he searches elsewhere. And tries to get enlightened himself further to clear the cobwebs of his understanding and seeks guidance to his progress.

The path of religion, path of yoga and the path of wisdom were intended for different classes of people. The wisdom is for the advanced seekers of truth. It deals with the nature of the ultimate Truth and Reality. It is meant for superior aspirants who have inner urge to know the truth and it is not for those who are immersed in earthly desires.

 Katha Upanishad:
This Ataman cannot be attained by the study of the Vedas, or by intelligence, or by much hearing of sacred books. It is attained by him alone whom It chooses. To such a one Ataman reveals Its own form. [Katha Upanishad Ch-II -23-P-20]

Mundaka Upanishad  :-
This Ataman cannot be attained through study of the Vedas, nor through intelligence, nor through much learning. He who chooses Ataman—by him alone is Ataman attained. It is Ataman that reveals to the seeker Its true nature. [    3 –page-70 Mundaka Upanishad  Upanishads by Nikilanada]

When the Upanishad says:  the human goal is to acquire Self-Knowledge and they indicate the personal gods, scriptures, worship and rituals are not the means to Self –Knowledge, then why anyone should indulge in it. The religion, concept of individualized god and scriptures are greatest obstacle to realize non-dual truth or self-realization, because they are based on false self.   Therefore, one has to search the ultimate truth without losing himself in the labyrinths of philosophy, he should indulge in deeper, inquiry, analysis and reasoning and assimilate and realize it.

Seekers goal is towards Self-knowledge and noting other then it. Therefore, guru is needed in religious and yogic paths which are meant for the people who are not searching for truth but they are searching for worldly comforts and temporary peace in this physical existence.  They fear of losing their physical identity and all that is connected to the physical identity. When one realizes the physical identity [ego] is false self and the true identity is the soul, which is in the form consciousness, then he realizes that the fear factor is limited to the false self within the false experience. When the self is not physical all the burden and bondage of the duality is mere mirage created out of consciousness.

Therefore, Self-Knowledge is necessary to know the fact that, the universe, which appears is in the form of mind and disappears as nothingness [formless] is   mere mirage created out of nothingness, which is consciousness.  Thus the consciousness is the source and witness of the universe or mind, which comes and goes.  Thus it is necessary to know the formless witness of the three states in order to know the fact that, the true self is apart and  free from the mirage ,which is in the form of birth, life, death and the universe.  Therefore, it is necessary for the seeker to make sure how the three states are mirage.

The body and the world are reality within the waking experience but the waking experience is mere illusion same way as the dream body and the dream world were reality within the dream. The dream becomes unreal when the waking takes place; similarly the waking experience becomes unreal when the nondual wisdom dawns.

The one who thinks himself as guru and the one who thinks himself as chela [disciple] will not be able get Self-Knowledge because both of them accepted themselves as body. And all their understanding, practices, knowledge are based on the false self.  Therefore, the Guru –Shisya concept is a great obstacle in pursuit of truth.  That is why Sri, Ramana Maharshi never accepted himself as guru or accepted any one as his disciple because he was fully immersed in his true self, which is formless consciousness.

Thus by surrendering to any guru or god men is not the means to self-knowledge.  The self is the true guru. Seeker has to surrender to the self by realizng the fact that the self is not physical. By realizing the self is not physical one becomes all the accumulated knowledge and inherited conditioning in the midst of duality and he finds freedom from experiencing the duality [waking] as reality.

There is no fear of losing anything because only ignorance vanishes and one becomes fully aware what is real and what is unreal in the midst of the unreal waking experience.

This will ensure that one has reached the right path of progress and will eventually get the knowledge of the true self.  A true seeker should seek only truth nothing but truth, his sincerity and urge to know the truth will lead him, not his mental decisions.

If one takes the religious based nondual path or yogic path, then the seeking is not spiritual but rather superficially mental for academic and self-aggrandising pursuits driven by the ego. There can be no two thoughts about it.

The path of wisdom needs a deep study of the mind and its substance, so one can resolve the conflicts that a seeking mind has. Such deeper leads on towards better grasping, understanding, assimilation and realization. Only if one has proper grasping he can have proper understanding.

They alone in this world are endowed with the highest wisdom who are firm in their conviction of the sameness and birthlessness of Ataman. The ordinary man does not understand their way. [Chapter IV — Alatasanti Prakarana 95-P-188 in Upanishads by Nikilanada]

This passage indicates the fact that everything is Ataman/spirit. The one who views and judges the worldview on the base of his birth /body will not realize the fact that, the man including the world is created sustained and finally dissolves as Ataman. Thus Ataman alone is, and all else is mirage.

Thus self-knowledge is the aim of every human being. Since everyone thinks the physical body is the self their aim is misdirected and they focus their attention on materiality which makes one feel the duality [waking] as reality.

Nisagadutta said:  Millions are in search of the ultimate truth, and only one in million will be able to grasp and realize it. By focusing more attention on Ataman by talking, writing, discussing only of Ataman, the conviction grows and becomes firmer and the duality will fade away as reality. Ataman/sprit which is one’s   true identity will prevail as birth-less and deathless, eternal substance and witness of the mirage called duality.

Therefore there is no need to study scriptures, or indulge in god and guru glorification or performing religious rituals.  Since, they are not the means to acquire non-dual wisdom. It is only waste of time and effort to indulge in those things.

The individual self is not real, is not accepted by many.  The nondual wisdom is based not on the individual self [ego].  Until people hold the ‘I’ [ego] as witness, they will not reach the ultimate understanding.

When Upanishad itself declares:-   sarvam khalvidam brahma - all this (universe) is verily Brahman. By following back all of the relative appearances in the world, we eventually return to that from which it is all manifest – the non-dual reality [ Chandogya Upanishad].

Then it is no use going roundabout way, trace the Brahman which is the formless substance and witness of the universe, which is in the form of mind.  By tracing the source of the mind or universe one will be able to realize the Brahman.

The true Self is not perceptible to the senses. It is perceived by Reason. It is not perceptible as a thing with form and attributes. To those whose attention is fixed on the body and the world, it is very difficult to attain Self-knowledge. It is also very difficult for them to see the atman as self. The attention towards the universe [mind] should be lessened by realizing the self is not the body. The attention has to be focused on the formless substance and witness of the universe [mind] should be increased. So long as the attention is directed towards the universe, the experience of birth, life and death will prevail as reality. But when the attention is directed towards the formless witness, the ignorance vanishes and sense of duality will disappear. Then there is unity in diversity.

What is the state of the ego or physical self when it has realized that the self is not the body? Such souls have attained their pristine condition. “Self” is not visible to the physical eyes. “Self” is not to be found in the world as a thing, entity or an object. Self is above these, has neither beginning nor ending.

A visible object has a beginning and an ending. Since Atman, which is in the form of consciousness is invisible to the physical eye; Atman or consciousness is without beginning and ending. Atman is always constant. Just as space is homogeneous everywhere, so is the Atman the same everywhere.
