The sadguru is within.

Sri Ramana Maharishi said: The sadguru is within.

Questioner: I am always at your feet. Will Bhagavan give us some upadesa (teaching) to follow? Otherwise how can I get help living 600 miles away?

Sri Ramana Maharshi: The sadguru (the true guru) is within.

Questioner: Sadguru is necessary to guide me to understand it.

Sri Ramana Maharshi: The sadguru is within.

Questioner: I want a visible Guru.

Sri Ramana Maharshi: That visible Guru says that he is within.

If one is seeking truth then one has to indulge in deeper self-search.

Sri, Ramana Maharishi said the guru is within. so   he referred to the self or Atman as guru  not the  physical apparatus.  This seeker has to focus his attention on the self or Atman, which is in the form of consciousness.    Thus glorifying gurus’ form is erroneous, because the body and the universe are myth on the ultimate standpoint. Thus indulging glorifying and worshiping of myth becomes greatest obstacle in pursuit of truth.  Thus seeker has to identify the true self as guru and proceed in his spiritual endeavor.   The inner grace of the inner guru [self] will guide until his ignorance disappears and he realizes his body and the universe are mere mirage created out of the consciousness, which is the true self.

Religious or yogic gurus propagate that: once a seeker identifies a Guru, he must totally surrender to the Guru and then from there onwards, the spiritual journey is fully the Guru's responsibility, not his... Hence the importance to choosing the right Guru is necessary, but in pursuit of truth the guru is not necessary, because the truth is not theoretical.  Truth has to be ascertained by the seeker on his own through a well-directed inquiry, analysis and reasoning based on the true self, which will lead the seeker to his destination.

It is better to take guidance from a Gnani and try to attain the same realization which he had, rather than spend their energies in deifying him. Let us remember that to deify a Gnani is to defy wisdom”

Hindu religious literature is full of such aphorisms as ' there is no higher deity than the Guru; the Guru is the ultimate Truth and Deity. God and  Avatars (incarnations) are secondary to the Guru in importance ;there is no higher refuge, no higher target, no higher destination than the Guru ; the Guru is God Himself ; God and the Guru are one ; he who makes a  distinction between the Guru and God is ignorant and stupid ; and scores of  similar others. They abound both in Sanskrit and in modern Indian languages.

People born in the different sect and they remain as its follower. Most of the sect are founded by some gurus, thus Indian belief system is a Guru Cult, i.e. believes in the worship of the Guru as the Supreme Deity.

When a seeker could not get full enlightenment from his inherited belief system, then only he searches elsewhere. And tries to get enlightened himself further to clear the cobwebs of his understanding and seeks guidance to his progress.

The path of religion, path of yoga and the path of wisdom were intended for different classes of people. The wisdom is for the advanced seekers of truth. It deals with the nature of the ultimate Truth and Reality. It is meant for superior aspirants who have inner urge to know the truth and it is not for those who are immersed in earthly desires.

 Katha Upanishad:-
This Atman cannot be attained by the study of the Vedas, or by intelligenceor by much hearing of sacred books. It is attained by him alone whom It chooses. To such a one Atman reveals Its own form.(Katha Upanishad Ch-II -23-P-20)
Mundaka Upanishad  :-
This Atman cannot be attained through study of the Vedas, nor through intelligence, nor through much learning. He who chooses Atman—by him alone is Ataman attained. It is Atman that reveals to the seeker Its true nature.( 3 –page-70  Mundaka Upanishad  Upanishads by Nikilanada)

When the Upanishads says:  the human goal is to acquire Self-Knowledge and they indicate the personal gods, scriptures, worship and rituals are not the means to Self –Knowledge, then why anyone should indulge in it. The religion, concept of individualized god and scriptures are greatest obstacle to realize non-dual truth or self-realization, because they are based on false self.  Therefore, one has to search the ultimate truth without losing himself in the labyrinths of philosophy, he should indulge in deeper, inquiry, analysis and reasoning and assimilate and realize it.

Seekers goal is towards Self-knowledge and noting other then it. Therefore, guru is needed in religious and yogic paths which are meant for the people who are not searching for truth but they are searching for worldly comforts and temporary peace in this physical existence.  They fear of losing their physical identity and all that is connected to the physical identity. When one realizes the physical identity (ego) is false self and the true identity is the soul, which is in the form consciousness, then he realizes that the fear factor is limited to the false self within the false experience. When the self is not physical all the burden and bondage of the duality is mere mirage created out of consciousness.

Therefore, Self-Knowledge is necessary to know the fact that, the universe, which appears is in the form of mind and disappears as nothingness (formless) is   mere mirage created out of nothingness, which is consciousness.  Thus the consciousness is the source and witness of the universe or mind, which comes and goes.  Thus it is necessary to know the formless witness of the three states in order to know the fact that, the true self is apart and  free from the mirage ,which is in the form of birth, life, death and the universe.  Therefore, it is necessary for the seeker to make sure how the three states are mirage.

The body and the world are reality within the waking experience but the waking experience is mere illusion, same way as the dream body and the dream world were reality within the dream. The dream becomes unreal when the waking takes place; similarly the waking experience becomes unreal when the non-dual wisdom dawns.

The one who thinks himself as guru and the one who thinks himself as chela [disciple] will not be able get Self-Knowledge because both of them accepted themselves as body. And all their understanding, practices, knowledge are based on the false self.  Therefore, the Guru –Shisya concept is a great obstacle in pursuit of truth.  That is why Sri, Ramana Maharishi never accepted himself as a guru or accepted any one as his disciple, because he was fully immersed in his true self, which is formless consciousness. There was no division in his consciousness even though he was in the midst of division or duality.

Thus by surrendering to any guru or god men is not the means to Self-knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana.  The self is the true guru. Seeker has to surrender to the self by realizing the fact that, the self is not physical but self is formless soul or spirit or consciousness. By realizing the self is not physical, he will be able to drop all the accumulated knowledge and inherited conditioning in the midst of duality and he finds freedom from experiencing the duality (waking) as reality.

Q:- The Vedanta and the Sankhya hold the key to the laws of mind and thought process which are co-related to the Quantum Field, i.e. the operation and distribution of particles at atomic and molecular levels.” -Prof. Brian David Josephson (1940 – ) Welsh physicist, the youngest Nobel Laureate

A:_- Sri, Sankara says in VivekaChudamani   :-

56. Neither by Yoga, nor by Sankhya, nor by work, nor by learning, but by the realisation of one's identity with Brahman is Liberation possible, and by no other means.

58. Loud speech consisting of a shower of words, the skill in expounding the Scriptures, and likewise erudition - these merely bring on a little personal enjoyment to the scholar, but are no good for Liberation.

59. The study of the Scriptures is useless so long as the highest Truth is unknown, and it is equally useless when the highest Truth has already been known.

60. The Scriptures consisting of many words are a dense forest which merely causes the mind to ramble. Hence men of wisdom should earnestly set about knowing the true nature of the Self.

61. For one who has been bitten by the serpent of Ignorance, the only remedy is the knowledge of Brahman. Of what avail are the Vedas and (other) Scriptures, Mantras (sacred formulae) and medicines to such a one?

62. A disease does not leave off if one simply utter the name of the medicine, without taking it; (similarly) without direct realisation one cannot be liberated by the mere utterance of the word Brahman.

63. Without causing the objective universe to vanish and without knowing the truth of the Self, how is one to achieve Liberation by the mere utterance of the word Brahman ? — It would result merely in an effort of speech.

64. Without killing one’s enemies, and possessing oneself of the splendour of the entire surrounding region, one cannot claim to be an emperor by merely saying, ‘I am an emperor’.
65. As a treasure hidden underground requires (for its extraction) competent instruction, excavation, the removal of stones and other such things lying above it and (finally) grasping, but never comes out by being (merely) called out by name, so the transparent Truth of the self, which is hidden by Maya and its effects, is to be attained through the instructions of a knower of Brahman, followed by reflection, meditation and so forth, but not through perverted arguments.

66. Therefore the wise should, as in the case of disease and the like, personally strive by all the means in their power to be free from the bondage of repeated births and deaths.

67. The question that thou hast asked today is excellent, approved by those versed in the Scriptures, aphoristic, pregnant with meaning and fit to be known by the seekers after Liberation.

Chandogya Upanishad
"When a person is sleeping soundly, free from dreams, with a still mind, that is the Self, fearless and deathless. That is Brahman, the supreme."

Seeker of truth has to direct realization of the true self, through deeper, inquiry, analysis and reasoning   and avoid losing precious time and effort loosing himself in philosophical studies.

The scientists now concluded that you are not the brain [body]. Consciousness requires the joint operation of brain, body and world. "You are not your brain. The brain, rather, is part of what you are."

The Biology of Consciousness

by Alva Noë. Hill and Wang, 2009

Alva Noe, a University of California, Berkeley, philosopher and cognitive scientist, argues that after decades of concerted effort on the part of neuroscientists, psychologists and philosophers "only one proposition about how the brain makes us conscious ... has emerged unchallenged: we don't have a clue." The reason we have been unable to explain the neural basis of consciousness, he says, is that it does not take place in the brain. Consciousness is not something that happens inside us but something we achieve it is more like dancing than it is like the digestive process. To understand consciousness the fact that we think and feel and that a world shows up for us we need to look at a larger system of which the brain is only one element. Consciousness requires the joint operation of brain, body and world. "You are not your brain. The brain, rather, is part of what you are."

Thus, science is going in the right direction in its invention and one day it will declare that everything is consciousness, which Sri, Sankar declared 1200 years back –everything is Atman- because Atman is in the form of consciousness.

Thus we have to know the fact that Buddha, Goudpada and Sri,Sankara are not only reformers but also  the greatest  scientists. Since there original thesis have been lost in the labyrinths of philosophy and mutilated by pundits and priest craft, it becomes very difficult understand and assimilate the wisdom expounded by the great masters. In addition, the conservativeness of the orthodox scholars will not allow any research other than playing with the words, which suits the mass mind sets, because of their egocentric outlook.

All the add-ons have to be deleted, in order to understand and assimilate the real fragrance of the wisdom expounded by the great masters of Advaita, but it is hurricane task.  Thus, it is no use going through all the scriptures, when there is direct path to non-dual truth.  The same time and effort can be used to reach the non dual destination, in lesser time and effort.

Non-duality does not need the support of any Scripture or Revelation like the Veda. For it is based, not upon the varying theological fancies, which are as numerous as the sands of the sea, but upon reason, the common heritage of all mankind, irrespective of colour or creed or clime.

Thus, self-knowledge is meant only for those who have intense urge, and courage to accept the truth with humility and reject the untruth. Since people start comparing with their scriptural knowledge, it becomes impossible to assimilate and realize the non-dual truth.   Therefore, there is no need to convince anyone other than our own-self to get the firm conviction.

Psychology is based on physicality.

Psychology is based on physicality.  Physicality is dependent on consciousness.  Consciousness is independent and consciousness is cause of physical existence [universe] and it itself is uncaused.

Psychologist  apply consciousness only to awareness of objects whereas India has specific Sanskrit words, whose equivalents in English do not exist for pure, transcendent, objectless consciousness, inclusive of deep sleep, dream and waking.

Deep sleep is "The Unconsciousness" of the psychologists: they have absolutely no idea of formless soul or Atman, which is objectless awareness.

Modern thinkers have not yet risen to the level of understanding "objectless consciousness." Only deep sleep can help them here. However they are groping their way to it with notions of "the unconsciousness", the “subconscious” etc.  Mind is objective awareness. And true self is objectless awareness.

One does not know how far mind extends. He knows only that he has got consciousness, that he has it, etc. one is thus certain it exists. Hence in scriptural language, "Consciousness is" --beyond that one can say nothing provable.

How does one know that there is a mind? That which makes one think or aware of anything—his body and the universe is what one becomes aware of. One uses the word 'mind' when he is aware of his body and his experience of the universe.

Psychology limits the mind to physical entity alone, whereas the mind is the whole physical existence, which includes the universe.  There is no agreement among psychologists about the nature of mind. They have different theories about it. Hence it is only ordinary or superficial persons who have the conceit to say that they know what mind is. But what mind is in itself none can tell without contradiction. Only when they can get an idea subject and object relation can they get out of their troubles and begin to understand mind.

Mental means that which has no length, breadth or thickness, for you cannot measure mind.  It is impossible for anyone to understand ultimate view of consciousness unless he has previously given long and patient thought and inquiry along right lines into his own mind. Therefore it is useless to discuss on it to people totally unprepared.

It is absurd to hold with materialists that the mind is entirely dependent on the body, is a part of it, is born and dies with it. For how does one know that he has a body? Not before the mind itself tells you. Your mind therefore is the principal factor here, and the body is really dependent on the mind, not vice versa.

Since we judge and reason on the base of false self within the false experience we merely assume of the consciousness. Therefore, deeper study is required to know the existence of the formless witness of the three states which is within the three states but it is without the three states.
And all this scientific proofs are not needed in pursuit of truth because the scientists themselves unaware of the fact that how their body is able to function and perceive the world as a person. With what?  They have to say it is consciousness.  That same consciousness exists without the body and world in deep sleep and it becomes aware of the body and world in waking or dream. Thus the knower of the body and the world is not the body; therefore, one has to mentally trace the knower of the body, which is without the body in order to become aware of the fact that existence of the consciousness, which exists with or without the body and world.  This is only for the beginner to know. As one goes deeper in the subject he becomes more and more aware of the ultimate truth, which is consciousness.  This declared this truth Sri, Sankara 1200 years back: - Atman is Brahman.  And everything is Brahman.  World is unreal and Brahman alone is real. This Advaitic truth can be realized without religious scriptures in lesser time and effort with well-directed inquiry, analysis and reasoning on true base.
