Adyathmic Discussion--313 (real and unreal)

Gaudapada’s rational exposition of Advaita: - that whatever is seen, whether external or internal, whether by the ordinary persons or yogis, is unreal.
· · ·

    • Rs Mani ‎"Yad drushyam tad nashyam"

    • And every so called apparently real has real as it substantive. What ever is seen is neither real nor unreal - Goudapaada calls that as vaitatyam - as the very title of his 2nd chapter indicates. Unreal cannot be seen or experienced. same applies to real too - it cannot be seen or experienced. The only reality is the seer - the conscious entity. Hari Om!

      Pranamas dear Sri Sadanandaji.
I respect your scriptural mastery and also your views and wisdom.
Sage Sri, Sankara says in VivekaChudamani :-
      58. Loud speech consisting of a shower of words, the skill in expounding the Scriptures, and likewise erudition - these merely bring on a little personal enjoyment to the scholar, but are no good for Liberation.
      59. The study of the Scriptures is useless so long as the highest Truth is unknown, and it is equally useless when the highest Truth has already been known.
      60. The Scriptures consisting of many words are a dense forest which merely causes the mind to ramble. Hence men of wisdom should earnestly set about knowing the true nature of the Self.
Without the scriptures one has to move ahead in his pursuit of truth.
Sri, Sankara says in Viveka Chudamani:-
      65. As a treasure hidden underground requires (for its extraction) competent instruction, excavation, the removal of stones and other such things lying above it and (finally) grasping, but never comes out by being (merely) called out by name, so the transparent Truth of the self, which is hidden by Maya and its effects, is to be attained through the instructions of a knower of Brahman, followed by reflection, meditation and so forth, but not through perverted arguments.
      66. Therefore the wise should, as in the case of disease and the like, personally strive by all the means in their power to be free from the bondage of repeated births and deaths.
The world is both real and unreal. It is real because it is a manifestation of consciousness, but is unreal, in the sense, that it is not absolute and eternal like consciousness itself.
Peoples approach is more practical, and they stuck with the reality of the world, they take it as real. That is why all the confusion.
In self-awareness-- the witness and witnessed are one in essence. That essence is consciousness. There is no second thing exists other than consciousness.
Thus whatever seen, known, believed and experienced as a person is reality within the waking experience but waking experience itself is mere illusion.
Soul, which is present in the form of consciousness, is the innermost self. Consciousness is the witness that experiences the action, the actor, and the world of separate things. It is like a light that illuminates everything in a theatre, revealing the master of ceremonies, the guests, and the dancers with complete impartiality. Even when they all depart, the light shines to reveal their absence.

What is not consciousness (formless) in the experience of diversity [waking or universe]? The waking and the dream cease to exist without consciousness. The seeker, seeking and his destination all are one in essence.

There is only need to realize the whole universe in which we exist is created out of consciousness (soul or Atman), the innermost self. On the standpoint innermost self, the universe is mere illusion created out of consciousness. Thus on the ultimate standpoint no second thing exists other than consciousness. Thus consciousness is ultimate truth or Brahman.
      With love, respect and regards
      Pranamas

    • Santthoseji – PraNAms. Everything you said is absolutely correct. mithyaa actually defined as sat asat vilakshaNam - it is neither sat nor asat -(it is not both real and unreal) - as you are quoting Vivekachudamani - look at the sloka where maaya is defined - sannapyaasannou ubhayaatmikaano - it is not sat, it is not asat, it not is both. .. mahat bhuuta anirvacaniiya ruupa. Hence illusion is somewhat incorrect translation for maayaa. Goudapaada negates only the reality assigned to the world by taking dream example. In the forth ch. he dismisses the creation as real since infinite Brahman cannot create since any creation involves a modification or vikaara. however the very fact that Goudapaada, who is part of creation is creating the kaarika for others to study, the so-called mayaa and ajaati vada has to be understood Icorrectly. It is real for those who have not yet realized, like the dream world - sakaale satyavat bhaati prabhode satyasaHt bhavet - says Shankara in Atma bodha. A dreamer does not think the dream is unreal – only a waker says it was unreal. Even the sloka from VivekaChudamani that you quoted – avijnaate pare tatve shaastraadhiistu nishphalaa| vijnaatepi pare tatve shaastraadhiistu nishphalaa| The study of scriptures is useless for those who have not realized and the study of scriptures is useless for those who have realized – if it is useless for both they what good are the shaatras? Hence the sloka has to be understood properly. The mere study of scriptures is useless unless one strives to understand the import of the scriptures – it is not mere understanding as a thought but understanding as a fact. It has been said that shaastraas support a seeker until he realizes and the realized one will support the shaastras after realization that they are indeed true and by importing the teaching to others who are in need of the teaching. Anyway I know you know that – just pointing out so that others do not misunderstand that world is illusion – it is recognized as maayaa only with realization of the truth behind it. In the tat tvam asi – the tat part that includes the whole world is not dismissed completely- The student is asked to look at the underlying substantive truth – aitadaatmya idagam sarvam tat satyam – sa aatmaa – tat tvam asi swetaketo. The essence of all that is seen is the absolute truth – sat – and that is the self that you are. My praNAms for the sat sangh. Hari Om!

    • Maniji - Yes if one uses the word asat in the meaning of mithyaa. Temporary is a concept of time but time itself is mithyaa. As long as one understands these correctly then there is no problme. Hari Om!

      Thank you Dear Sri Sadanandaji,
I respect your valuable views and wisdom.
As per my conviction derived from deeper self-search:-
Those who assert the world is not illusion because they are unaware of the fact that, the world is reality within the illusion (waking). And they are frightened to consider the world as illusion. Without considering the world as illusion, it is impossible to acquire Self-knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana.
After verifying through deeper inquiry if one finds the world is reality within the illusion then he cannot again say the world is not illusion.
If one is frightened to accept the world is illusion (waking) than he is unfit to acquire Self-knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana. Thus who stuck with the reality of the world, are stuck with reality of the individual experiences of birth, life and death, which takes place within the unreal world. Thus pursuit of truth is for those who have courage to accept the reality as it is, that is the reality without form, time and space.
According to Adavaita Vedanta, the Veda addresses itself to two kinds of audiences - the ordinary ones who desire the transitory heaven and other pleasures obtained as a result of ritual sacrifices, and the more advanced seeker who seeks to know Brahman. Thus, the purva mimam.sa, with its emphasis on the karma kanda of the Vedas, is meant for the first audience, to help lead its followers along the way. However, the Vedanta, with its emphasis on the jnana kanda, is meant for those who wish to go beyond such transient pleasures.
Sri, Sankara says in Brahma Sutras: that Brahman is the cause of the world, whereas in Mandukya he denies it. This is because he says that at the lower stage of understanding, the former teaching must be given, for people will get frightened as they cannot understand how the world can be without a cause, but to those in a higher stage, the truth of non-causality can be revealed.
Thus those who are frightened to accept the world is mere illusion should never indulge path of wisdom.

Modern Ramanuja- J.Krishnamurti describes to perfection is the awakening to Reality—the realization that pure Consciousness alone is, that the perpetually fluctuating and evanescent contents of the mind derive from it. This awakening effectively happens in an instant. But in order for the lightning flash to take place, resulting in a firm and unshakable certitude, a long labour is necessary, which he seems to underestimate. “Truth is a pathless land” is his answer.

Many thinkers feel J.K’s teaching seems essentially negative, a potent but bitter medicine for those imprisoned by institutional cults. He breaks the student’s bonds, but then leads him to a vast desert where he abandons him. The ultimate state of consciousness he describes is that of the traditional sage or fully enlightened being, but he does not show us the process leading to the realization of this state. He describes marvelously the goal, but does not indicate the steps to be taken: his recurring phrases "unified consciousness" and "let go" are not a road-map.

J.Krishnamurti‘s approach was more practical, and he stuck with the reality of the world, he took it as real.

Sri, Sankara himself has warned us not to use ambiguous words, and to practice semantic analysis in his book "Definition of one's own Self. (Page 199, v.24 of "Sankara's Selected Works)
Sri, Sankara founded his Advaita Vedanta either on reason independent of sruti or on sruti confirmed by reason." Sri, Sankara's commentary on the Mandukya Upanishad, II, 1: This [the unreality of duality] is borne out by the Srutis ... But it is possible also to show the unreality of the object world even from pure reasoning, and this second chapter is undertaken for that purpose.

Sri, Sankara himself had often said that his philosophy was based on Sruti, or revealed scripture. This may be because Sri, Sankara addressed the ordinary man, who finds security in the idea of causality and thus in the idea of God—and Revelation is indispensable to prove the latter. He believed that those of superior intelligence, have no need of this idea of divine causality, and can therefore dispense with Sruti and arrive at the truth of Non-Dualism by pure reason.

Sri, Sankara, in debates with Buddhists and others who did not recognize the authority of the Vedas, had been obliged to prove the truth of Advaita by means of reason alone. Mandukya Upanishad, a scripture which appealed to reason to the exclusion of Revelation.

Nonduality does not need the support of any Scripture or Revelation like the Veda. For it is based, not upon the varying theological fancies, which are as numerous as the sands of the sea, but upon reason, the common heritage of all mankind, irrespective of colour or creed or clime.

      Upanishad says:-
This Ataman cannot be attained by the study of the Vedas, or by intelligence, or by much hearing of sacred books. It is attained by him alone whom It chooses. To such a one Ataman reveals Its own form. [Katha Upanishad Ch-II -23-P-20]
      Mundaka Upanishad :-
This Ataman cannot be attained through study of the Vedas, nor through intelligence, nor through much learning. He who chooses Ataman—by him alone is Ataman attained. It is Ataman that reveals to the seeker Its true nature. [ 3 –page-70 Mundaka Upanishad Upanishads by Nikilanada]

      When the Upanishads say:-

It is attained by him alone whom It chooses. To such a one Ataman reveals its own form. Then what is the use of indulging through our intelligence or our accumulated knowledge, when one is not chosen by the self, which is the soul, which is in the form of consciousness.

There is no need for any philosophy in pursuit of truth because they take the seeker nearer to truth but they create more doubts and confusions.

The scriptures and theories and teaching based on the ego are not the yardstick. Using them as yardstick to understand and assimilate the truth will lead one towards pursuit of arguments. Seeker of truth has to discover on his own, the truth of his true existence by inquiring “what is mind?” and “what is substance of the mind?” and move forward.

The ultimate truth is one without the second, the one is not in the sense half or two, but the one that remain forever One, without the second. The consciousness is all pervading. There is no place where consciousness is not.
Consciousness is in everyone, consciousness is in everything, consciousness is one behind many. Consciousness alone is. It means the universe and its contents are the visible form of consciousness. And consciousness in turn is invisible form of the universe, which appears as mind.
      With love, respect and regards

    • Rs Mani Ego gets educated of its own swaroopa through exposure to teaching. Ego has to be there and after swaroopa is unfolded, ego continues to be there as enlightened ego. It is like using a thorn to remove a thorn embedded under the foot, and throwing both the thorns away, and feeling comfort only from the discomfort caused by the embedded thorn. For a Gnani:- his body is not body, even though he has the body , his ego is not ego, even though he has the ego and his experience of the world is not the world, even though he is in the midst of the world, because he is fully aware of the fact that his body ,his ego and his experience of the world are mere mirage created out of consciousness. Thus his body ,his ego and his experience of the world are reality within the waking experience, but waking experience itself is mere illusion. the dream becomes unreal when waking takes place. Similarly the waking becomes unreal when wisdom dawns. The wisdom Dawns when waking entity becomes aware of the fact that it itself is not the self, but the self is that, which witnesses the coming and going of the three states without the physical apparatus. The formless soul, which is present in the form of consciousness is the innermost self. the innermost self is the formless substance and witness of the three states. The formless substance and witness of the three states are one in essence. That essence is formless consciousness. Thus there is no second thing exists other than consciousness.

Just like one is not fooled by the appearance of sun rising in the east and setting in the west, gnaani is not fooled by what is happening in body, mind and intellect. He does make use of them for maintenance of the body. In every respect a gnaani is like an agnaani with only difference that gnaani knows what is reality about the body, mind, and intellect and the world confronts him and remains not disturbed or agitated over what is happening in these, and in short he is an emotionally mature person!

I respect your views and wisdom dear Richard
As per my conviction derived from deeper self :-
Self is not ‘you’ but the self is that witnesses ‘you and the world’ together without the physical apparatus. You are the false self(ego or waking entity) within the false experience(waking) bound by birth, life and death and form, time and space whereas the ‘Self ‘ is birthless and deathless because it is formless. Thus self is not limited to waking state alone because it pervades in everything and everywhere in all the three states. Thus limiting the ‘self’ to waking entity alone is cause of the ignorance.

The dream entity (you) and the dream world becomes falsehood when waking takes place. Similarly the waking entity (you) and the waking world become falsehood when wisdom dawns. Wisdom dawns when waking entity (you) realizes it itself is not the self but the self is that which witnesses the coming and going of the three states. The witness and the three states are one in essence. That essence is consciousness (Atman).
Thus consciousness is ultimate truth or Brahman. Atman is second to none.

Thus one has to know ‘What is mind? ‘What is the substance of the mind?’ and ‘What is the source of the mind?’ in order to realize the non-dualistic or Advaitic truth.

If one is seeking truth nothing but truth one has to drop the worshiping and glorifying the physical gurus. The guru and god glorification is for those who are not seeking truth.

If one is seeking truth nothing but truth one has to drop the worshiping  and glorifying the physical gurus.  The guru and god glorification is for those who are not seeking truth.

Vedas bars human worship:-
Translation 3.

"They are enveloped in darkness, in other words, are steeped in ignorance and sunk in the greatest depths of misery who worship the uncreated, eternal prakrti -- the material cause of the world -- in place of the All-pervading God, But those who worship visible things born of the prakrti, such as the earth, trees, bodies (human and the like) in place of God are enveloped in still greater darkness, in other words, they are extremely foolish, fall into an awful hell of pain and sorrow, and suffer terribly for a long time."- [Yajur Veda 40:9.]

Than why worship and glorify the GURUS and YOGIS [human form]   in place of God when Veda bars such activities and  it also warns people who indulge in such activities are enveloped in still greater darkness, in other words, they are extremely foolish, fall into an awful hell of pain and sorrow, and suffer terribly for a long time.

It is impossible to get Vedic Moksha by gloryfying Gods and gurus and indulging in rituals.

The question arises as to what is Santana Dharma? It can safely be said that it is the Vedic religion based on Veda's alone.
The Hinduism as we find today is not pure Vedic religion it is  mixer of different ideologies accepted by the people time to time.  Thus the Hinduism is hotchpotch mixer of many ideologies.
Hinduism is not religion it is way of living of different caste and creeds following their own regional cultures and traditions in different parts of India.   All the so called Hindus are divided by caste, sub-castes and creeds with in the Hinduism.  Thus the pure Santana Dharma or Vedic religion is no longer in existence in its ancient grandeur as it was prior to the Buddhism and Jainism.
As one goes deeper in to the annals of the religion one becomes aware of the fact that, Santana Dharma has no beginning. Nobody can say when it started. It is without a beginning and so without an end. It is eternal and everlasting. That which has a beginning, has also an end, as all beginnings have an end also.
Santana Dharma has no founder. All religions are known by their founders or prophets but this is not the case with Santana Dharma. It neither has any prophet to begin it nor any book or authorized scripture told by the prophet who got revelation.
If Santana Dharma has no founder but classeclasses so called Hindu religions are known by their founders or sages, therefore Hinduism cannot be the pure Vedic or Santana Dharma. Thus, it proves that, the religions founded by the Sages after 7th century onwards are not the pure Santana Dharma or Vedic religion.
As one peeps in to the annals of the all history of all religions, one becomes aware of the fact that, the religions with scripters have got the largest number of followers and those without scriptures are rare and scarce. In both these class of religions, one finds that the truth is the result of experience of a particular person – Jesus, Prophet Mohammed or Buddha and Sri Sankara, Guru Nanak, Mahavira. All of them experienced truth and that they preached. All religions are built upon direct experience of this experience. But there is a difference.
Others have the founders of this experience known as the first founder of the religion and after their name the religion is known. The other difference is that they now claim that the experience, the prophets had, is now no longer possible. So one have to rely on "Belief”.
The experience of the scientists says that if one experience is possible, it will be repeated eternally. This is the Law of Nature. What once takes place, takes place often and always.
As one goes deeper into the annals of religious history,  he becomes aware of the fact that, Santana Dharma differs with other religions on this point. Santana Dharma is not based on spiritual experience of any single individual or any such revelation. It is based on realization, on intuition, and experience of a number of seers, sages and mystics who realized the Infinite and were illuminated. It does not owe its origin to any one person or prophet nor does it adhere to any papal authority or dogma.
It does not built around one man as its center though it is not opposed to philosophies build around personalities and prophets. It believes in scientific precision and experiments to arrive at truth any time and many times, so it believes in free expression of thoughts and enquiry into the fundamentals even. It is therefore a tolerant religion, granting freedom of Enquiry and Expression, seeking evidence.
Looking in to all these facts one can conclude that the Santana Dharma is  an eternal and everlasting humanitarian religion of all mankind. It is not limited to the teaching of any particular people or class of people or any form of worship. It is a comprehensive way, a law of Being ever praying to be with the Absolute.
In this respect, the present Hinduism with its diverse caste and creed, dogmas, rituals, beliefs and worships are not purely Vedic Religion but it is  hotchpotch of ideologies adopted from other ideologies and seers experiences.
As one goes in deeper in annals of religious  history,   one also finds the oldest spiritual writing known to mankind in the Vedas about 6000 BC, orally transmitted for most of history and written down in Sanskrit. It makes them the world’s longest and most ancient revealed scripture of Santana Dharma.
Vedas are concerned with wisdom; what is life about; what does death means, what the human being is, what is the nature of the Absolute that sustains us, and the cosmos etc…..
Sanatana Dharma believes that there is nothing that is not God. The Lord is enshrined in the hearts of all. God permeates everything and nothing permeates Him.
The famous peace invocation of Isa Upanishad says:-
  Om Purna- madah, purna-midam purnat-purnam-udacyate
 Purnaysa purna-madaya purna-meva-vasisyate
Which means
All this is full /from fullness, fullness comes
When fullness is taken from fullness/ fullness still remains.
This belief is all- comprehensive and all- absorbing. There is nothing that is not God

This truth has been told by the seers. This is the only truth but is described by the people differently.
The message of Sanatana Dharma goes that Akem Satya; Vipraha vividha Vadanti i.e. Truth is one but the people describe it in different ways. Those on journey to Eternity may differ but once reached there, all the differences sink into oneness.
The whole humanity has to arrive at this eternal truth one day.
Looking all these above aspect on can conclude the present Hindusim is modified to suit mass mind set by the sages by adopting ideology from other ideologies in the past is nothing to do with the pure Vedic religion or Santana Dharma.
Sanatana Dharma aims at making the whole world full of Aryas. It is not confined to the need of self-salvation alone. It has a missionary message too. It says, ’Kranvanto Viswam Aryam’ let the people of the world be made Arya i.e. gentle, righteous, and religious minded. The central point of Isa Upanishad is -- Renounce and enjoy. This has to be our aim of life.
Sanatana Dharma is a cosmopolitan religion. It wishes the happiness of the world. Man is essentially divine. There is divinity in every man. He has to realize it. Then alone the world can become a place to live in. Sanatana Dharma says that
Sarve Bhavanti Sukhinah/ Sarve santu Niramayah
Sarve Bhadrani Pashyanti, Ma Kashchid Dukh Bhag Bhaveta.
It means: - Let everyone without distinction be happy. Let everyone be without any ailment. Let everyone look like Arya, noble and righteous. Let there be no one to have any share of sorrow or grief.
This is the philosophy of Sanatana Dharma -- a religion of all religions and all mankind.
Sanatana Dharma stresses upon action. It believes in theory of Karma. The Upanishad says, ’you are what your driving desire is, as your desire is, so is your will, as your will is, so is your deed.  As your deed is, so is your destiny.’  Thus we create our own destiny through thought and action. So the message goes that there is no joy in the finite, there is joy only in the Infinite. Nothing can satisfy us but reunion with our real Self which in fact is attainment of Sat-Chit-Anand. Self-realization is in becoming immortal.  It does not mean an everlasting life but it stands for a state that is beyond death and life alike.
Santana Dharma believes in the immortality of soul. It inhabits one body after another according to Karma in previous life, during its eternal journey to the Absolute till it is one with God. This is called belief in Reincarnation. It is not a fact that the individual dies with the death of the visible body. At death, the soul leaves the physical body and does not die. It gets into a subtle body called Astral on non-physical dimension. The forces which brought the body and personality into existence continue shaping its destiny after death and would do so till unison with the Absolute when one becomes free from the circle of birth and death.
When Yajurved says:-
Translation 1.
They enter darkness, those who worship natural things (for example air, water, sun, moon, animals, fire, stone, etc).
They sink deeper in darkness those who worship sambhuti. (Sambhuti means created things, for example table, chair, idol
etc.)
[Yajurved 40:9]
Translation
2.
"Dee p into shade of blinding gloom fall asambhuti's worshippers. They sink to darkness deeper yet who on sambhuti are intent."
[Yajurveda Samhita by Ralph T. H. Giffith pg 538]

Translation 3.
"They are enveloped in darkness, in other words, are steeped in ignorance and sunk in the greatest depths of misery who worship the uncreated, eternal prakrti -- the material cause of the world -- in place of the All-pervading God, But those who worship visible things born of the prakrti, such as the earth, trees, bodies (human and the like) in place of God are enveloped in still greater darkness, in other words, they are extremely foolish, fall into an awful hell of pain and sorrow, and suffer terribly for a long time."
[Yajur Veda 40:9.]
So, Yajur Veda indicates that:-
They sink deeper in darkness those who worship sambhuti. (Sambhuti means created things, for example table, chair, idol etc [Yajurved 40:
9]
Those who w
orship visible things born of the prakrti, such as the earth, trees, bodies (human and the like) in place of God are enveloped in still greater darkness, in other words, they are extremely foolish, fall into an awful hell of pain and sorrow, and suffer terribly for a long time." [Yajur Veda 40:9.]
When the religion of the Veda knows no idols then why so many gods and goddesses with different form and name are being propagated as Vedic gods. Why these conceptual gods are introduced when Vedic concept of god is free from form and attributes.
Who introduced concept of god with attributes and attributeless gods, when Yajur Veda says: -   those who worship visible things, born of the prakrti, such as the earth, trees, bodies (human and the like), in place of God are enveloped in still greater darkness. Therefore, all these add-ons proves that the form and attribute based concepts are introduced by some sages of the past with new belief system and code of conducts in the name of Vedas.
Sruti is made the final or exclusive authority in apara Vidya and that for supporting the tenet of the CAUSAL relation or creatorship of Brahman,  Nirguna Brahman = the "Absolute beyond qualities," which can be defined only in a negative way. For the Shankarian school = the Ultimate Reality, higher than the Lord. i.e. of Saguna or apara Brahman ... The support of Scriptural Revelation is, therefore, absolutely necessary for this hypothesis of cosmology, this Saguna or apara (= inferior) Brahman, but not for the absolute truth of Nirguna Brahman.
Therefore, all the add-ons and attribute based knowledge, which are inferior, have to be bifurcated and excluded to know the ultimate truth.
Gaudapada says that:- The merciful Veda teaches karma and Upaasana to people of lower and middling intellect, while Jnana is taught to those of higher intellect.
This clearly indicates that religion, which is based on individual conduct, prescribes karma and Upaasana to people of lower and middling intellect, therefore religion is for the lower intellect. And wisdom is for those are capable of inquiring into their own existence to know and realize the ultimate truth, which is Brahman.
Brahman is considered the all-pervading consciousness, which is the basis of all the animate and inanimate entities and material. (brahmano hi pratisthaham, Bhagavad Gita 14.27)
Sri, Sankara’s notion of Maya, the cosmic illusion, which must be transcended in order to realize the truth of Brahman, which means ultimate truth.
If Brahman is considered the all-pervading consciousness then, it is necessary to realize, the consciousness as self, which pervades all the three states, to realize the fact that, there is no second thing exists other the consciousness. Thus, consciousness [Ataman] is ultimate truth [Brahman].
As indicated in ISH Upanishads: - By worshipping gods and goddesses you will go after death to the world of gods and goddesses. But will that help you? The time you spend there is wasted, because if you were not there you could have spent that time moving forward towards Self-knowledge, which is your goal. In the world of gods and goddesses you cannot do that, and thus you go deeper and deeper into darkness.
It clearly indicates that:-If the human goal is to acquire Self-Knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana  then why one has to indulge in rituals and glorifying the conceptual gods, goddesses and gurus to go in to deeper darkness. Instead   spend that time moving forward towards Self-knowledge, which is one’s prime goal.
Since it is eternal and infinite, it comprises the only truth. The goal of Vedic religion, through the various yogas, is to realize that the consciousness (Atman) is actually nothing but Brahman.
The Vedic pantheon of gods is said, in the Vedas and Upanishads, to be only higher manifestations of Brahman. For this reason, "ekam sat" (all is one), and all is Brahman.
Thus, the goal is to realize Atman  (soul or consciousness).  If Atman [consciousness] is nothing but Brahman and by realizing Atman (soul or consciousness) as Brahman (ultimate truth) is truth realization or Self-Realization , then there is no need to follow religion, study scriptures or glorifying gods or  gurus and  follow the path of doubts and confusion by losing oneself in the present form of Hinduism, which contradicts the Vedic  ideology.
As declared by Vedas and Upanishads: - the main aim of human life is to acquire Self-Knowledge. Therefore ,  the time one spends in religious ritual, glorifying gods and gurus is wasted. One should utilize that same time to acquire Self-knowledge, which is his prime goal.
The Sruti itself says: "This Atma is NOT to be attained by a study of the Vedas.  [Katha Upanishad I, 2, 23.]
Why study of scriptures when Shruti itself declares,” This Atman is not  to be attained by study of the Vedas.” Thus the people who are after Vedic moksha will not attain it throughHindu orthodoxy. As Vedas declare it is beyond Vedas.   Where Veda ends [VEDA- ANTH]   there is moksha.   Thus, the present Hinduism, which is mother of all hotchpotch ideology, is not the means for  Self-Knowledge, because it is full of orthodox conduct belief, theoretical dogmas based prescription for moksha[freedom]. The self-knowledge is the prime goal of human  life  as declared by Vedas, which can be attained by knowing the ultimate truth or Brahman.
Self-knowledge cannot be attained by study of the Vedas and intellectual understanding or by bookish knowledge.  Therefore there is no use of studying the Vedas and other scriptures in order to acquire the non-dual wisdom.  That is why Buddha rejected the scriptures, and even Sri, Sankara indicated that, the ultimate truth lies beyond religion, concept of god and scriptures.
There is only one Reality to be known, the same for all seekers, but the ways to it, are hidden by the religion.  Self-discovery is the only way, towards non-dual Absolute without any religious doctrines, which will help the seekers to unfold the mystery of the illusion in which we all are searching the truth of our true existence.
