Adyathmic Discussion -355 (It is not that one should pore over the ancient scriptures.

Even after so many centuries have passed since Sri, Sankara appeared; yet it is very hard to find his true teachings understood anywhere in the world, because so few could rise to his level.

Sage Sri, Sankara gave religion and scholasticism and yoga no less than philosophy, to the world. He was great enough to be able to do so. His commentary on Mandukya is pure philosophy, but many of his other books are presented from a religious standpoint to help those who cannot rise up to philosophy.

Ultimate truth or Brahman can be established and conformed mentally by soul-centric reason independent of scriptures. It is possible also to show the unreality of the objective universe even from well directed pure reasoning.

The scripture are for the ordinary man who are immersed in practical life within the practical world, who finds security in the idea of causality and thus in the idea of God.

Those of superior intelligence, have no need of this idea of divine causality, and can therefore dispense with Vedas and arrive at the truth of Non-Dualism by pure reason.

People, who did not recognize the authority of the scriptures, will be able to prove the truth of non-dualistic by means of reason alone. Ultimate truth does not need the support of any Scripture or Revelation like the Veda. It is based, not upon the varying theological fancies, which are as numerous as the sands of the sea, but upon reason, the common heritage of all mankind, irrespective of colour or creed or clime. :--FORMLESS PATH

  • Rs Mani Scriptures particularly the Upanishads, do not attempt to "establish" the ultimate Truth. When you say by "reasoning" i.e. "Ultimate truth or Brahman can be established and conformed mentally by soul-centric reason independent of scriptures." how does one start this reasoning independently without the help of anyone, as many do not know that there is Ultimate Truth, and they are ignorant about that. Teachings as in Scriptures aid one to take up the reasoning. Independently one cannot do the reasoning, "swatantrena aatmavicharam na kuryat"!

  • Santthosh Kumaar Sri, Sankara himself had often said that his philosophy was based on Sruti, or revealed scripture. This may be because Sri, Sankara addressed the ordinary man, who finds security in the idea of causality and thus in the idea of God—and Revelation is indispensable to prove the latter. He believed that those of superior intelligence, have no need of this idea of divine causality, and can therefore dispense with Sruti and arrive at the truth of Non-Dualism by pure reason.

Lots scholars will teach that all is yourself, but none of them can show that this is so, none has analyzed it scientifically, and none can prove it. Rational proof is required, so that one arrive at knowing the ultimate truth or Brahman i.e. Gnana. Theirs is mere dogma, parrotism, repetition of what they read in scripture. Authoritarianism merely assumes as true what another says, but what has yet to be proved.

Consciousness is that which knows everything, that which sees. Consciousness alone remains after one gets rid of all thoughts and ideas by identification with self. Consciousness is only the seer; it is not Brahman that is an error. It becomes Brahman only after soulcentric reasoning.
  • Rs Mani Consciousness is Brahman and there is no "becoming" as what becomes can become also. Consciousness appears to give the platform for all knowledge, as consciousness per se has nothing there to know because it alone remains and where is the other to be known.
  • Santthosh Kumaar Consciousness is the root element of the universe. From consciousness the universe comes into existence. In the consciousness the universe resides. And into the consciousness the universe is dissolved. Consciousness is the parent of all that is there is.

The consciousness is the only reality, and the universe to but an illusory manifestation.
The Veda serves only as the starting point. What one has to learn from Veda must be understood through the exercise of reason, as far as reason might go. And what one has understood must be realized in one’s life.

It is not that one should pore over the ancient scriptures. There is no need to study first then realize. One has to realize first then only he will know ‘what is truth’ and ‘what is untruth’.

    • Rs Mani What is it that "One has to realize first then only he will know ‘what is truth’ and ‘what is untruth’. Does it mean What is Truth and what is Untruth is to be known after Realization? What is the difference between Realizing and Knowing in our context? If one does not know what truth is, he has ignorance and removal of any ignorance including ignorance of truth, is possible only through knowledge alone. For this one has to use the right means of knowledge and through reasoning the ignorance cannot go!
    • Santthosh Kumaar Sri, Sankara says in VivekaChudamani :-

      56. Neither by Yoga, nor by Sankhya, nor by work, nor by learning, but by the realisation of one's identity with Brahman is Liberation possible, and by no other means.
      58. Loud speech consisting of a shower o
f words, the skill in expounding the Scriptures, and likewise erudition - these merely bring on a little personal enjoyment to the scholar, but are no good for Liberation.

      59. The study of the Scriptures is useless so long as the highest Truth is unknown, and it is equally useless when the highest Truth has already been known.

      60. The Scriptures consisting of many words are a dense forest which merely causes the mind to ramble. Hence men of wisdom should earnestly set about knowing the true nature of the Self.

      61. For one who has been bitten by the serpent of Ignorance, the only remedy is the knowledge of Brahman. Of what avail are the Vedas and (other) Scriptures, Mantras (sacred formulae) and medicines to such a one?

      62. A disease does not leave off if one simply utter the name of the medicine, without taking it; (similarly) without direct realisation one cannot be liberated by the mere utterance of the word Brahman.
    • Santthosh Kumaar The ignorance will not vanish without wisdom. Wisdom will dawn only when the waking entity will realize it itself is not the self, but the self is birthless soul which witnesses the coming and going of the three states without the physical apparatus. Thus it is necessary to realize the formless witness (soul) and the three states (witnessed) are one in essence in order to realize the form, time and space (universe) are one in essence.

      • Santthosh Kumaar The Self –Knowledge or brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana is goal of the true seeker. Self-knowledge is end of all egocentric knowledge.

Self-knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana is declared by the Indian sages in the past has to be mentally excavated from labyrinths of philosophy. So many conceptual divisions invented by teachers of philosophy by their excessive analysis and different idea of truth and interpretations. All these concepts and ideas are never ending process.

The seeker of truth need not take the path of doubt and confusion, which takes him nowhere. Fortunate is the seeker who does not lose himself in the labyrinths of these theoretical philosophies. By perfect understanding of ‘what is what’ leads to nondual self-awareness. Seeker has to behave in a normal and sane way and silently reflect on the subject constantly.

There is no body, no ego and no experience of the world in realm of truth because the body and the world are one in essence. That essence is consciousness.

The one who has the firm conviction that, he is an individual separate from the world and world existed prior to him and he is born in it afterwards is egocentric. And he is unfit to grasp the ultimate truth or Brahman.

Seeker has to trace the source of the mind or universe to realize the fact that, mind and its formless substance and the source are one in essence.

The truth is hidden within the mind which is in the form of universe and it requires deeper self-search mental excavation, the removal of the ignorance, which is the cause of experiencing the illusion or duality as reality.

Grasping the transparent Truth of the self, which is hidden by illusion or waking or universe, is to be attained through soulcentric reasoning, followed by reflection, meditation and so forth, but not through perverted egocentric arguments.

People think self-knowledge is very difficult to achieve or understand. Self-knowledge which has to be acquired carefully and gradually, through deeper self-search.

In the past, spirituality was treated not as a separate subject but as a part of religion, but it is not so. Religion is based on the form and spirituality is based on formless. Therefore, spirituality is nothing to with religion. Spirituality is a rational enquiry regarding all that is known to exist. Every one, each to the extent to which one's reasoning power admits, is by nature free to exercise this faculty, at whatever stage one may be. One is able to devote himself exclusively to a pursuit of the highest Truth, by means of reason.

In the ancient time, religious, Yogic or mystic disciplines, which were not an end in itself, considered to be means for self-realization. But such discipline is almost impossible task for the modern man to adopt. Day by day modern man is becoming aware of the fact that religion and yoga are nothing to do with pursuit of truth. .

The modern mindset is pre-eminently scientific owing to the great progress that science has made. And the best method of freeing the one from his inaccurate ways of thinking is to imbue him as fully as possible with the scientific spirit. It is therefore only one who possesses a clear knowledge of its methods and results i.e., who is able to make reason the highest means of enquiry that would be fit for self-knowledge

Vedanta itself admits its highest Truth that is Atman or Brahman cannot be reached by any path other than that of reason and unless the reason is sharper than the ‘Edge of a razor'.

Reason on the true base is the highest means of attaining self- knowledge. Religion, theology, mystic practice and yoga are not the means to acquire non-dual wisdom. Absence of reason is absence of wisdom.

Sage Sri, Sankara: ~ arrive at the truth of Non-Dualism by pure reason***

Sage Sri, Sankara himself had often said that his philosophy was based on Sruti or revealed scripture.  This may be because Sage Sri, Sankara addressed the ordinary man, who finds security in the idea of causality and thus, in the idea of God—and Revelation is indispensable to prove the latter.  He believed that those of superior intelligence, have no need of this idea of divine causality, and can, therefore, dispense with Sruti and arrive at the truth of Non-Dualism by pure reason.

Only through Soulcentric reasoning, one will be able to cross the domain of the form, time, and  space.
Ashtavakra Gita: ~ It is not the absence of Buddhi (reason) that can grasp Advaita but the man who possesses the highest intellect. Brains are necessary. Such a man, by merely hearing the truth mentioned will know it. (Page~ 224).

The one who possesses the highest intellect can grasp Advaitic truth, by merely hearing the truth mentioned will know it.

Bhagavad Gita: ~ Reason as means to reality. (Chap.18 verse 37)

In chap. 10 of in Bhagavad Gita, Krishna says: ~ I cannot save you, but I can give you Buddhi (reason). (chap. 10)

In chap. 10 of in Bhagavad Gita, Krishna says: ~ "I have given you the most secret teaching, now reflect over it all" Krishna plainly says reflect, think. (Verse 63 of Chap. 18)

Mundaka Upanishad says: ~  Both states are harmful and take you away from the path of inquiry into truth. (Page 234)

Reasoning is interpretable in two ways. The egocentric interpretation is to apply it only to the practical purpose (waking experience). The Soulcentric interpretation is to apply it to the three states. The latter leads to the final settlement of the problems because it takes all data into consideration.

Brahman (God)
The Soul is the innermost Self. The Soul is present in the form of the consciousness.  The Consciousness is the ultimate truth or Brahman.  The Ultimate truth or Brahman is God. Realize the consciousness as the ultimate truth or Brahman. The consciousness is existence, knowledge and Absolute awareness.  The consciousness is non-dual and infinite, eternal and ‘one’ and which fills all that exists.

Self-realization is the realization of the Advaitic truth.  There is nothing more to be realized other than the truth, which is beyond the form, time, and space.

After acquiring the Self-knowledge or Brahma Gnana Knowledge or Atma Gnana nothing needs to be acquired. Self-knowledge or Brahma Gnana Knowledge or Atma Gnana frees the Soul, the innermost self from the dualistic illusion.  When the Soul is free from the dualistic illusion then it is free from experiencing the illusory birth, life, death and the world as a reality.

Adyathmic Discussion -356

Trev Light Bown:- You as Santthosh kumaar are of duality. Talk is of thought and time. The very nature of a person is mind/ body orientation. So for yourself to knock every other teacher is obvious ego. Truth of non-duality can never by taught by a duality mind of reason and logic.

Dearest  Trev,
I respect everyone’s views and wisdom.

 As per my conviction

The duality is present only when form, time and space are present. The form, time and space are one in essence. The ego, body and the world are one in essence.  That essence is consciousness. Thus there is no division in consciousness in reality.  The thinker, thought and the world are one in essence (soul or consciousness). The one who has realized the soul is the true self will not see the illusory division even though he is in the midst of duality. A Gnani is fully aware of the fact that, his body, his ego and his experience of the world are mere mirage created out of consciousness whereas the ignorant thinks that, the experience of the birth, life, death and the world as reality. Because ignorant bases himself on the waking entity (ego), which is the false self within the false experience (waking).

So long as one is in the realm of duality, one has to explain how or why one thing came from another; and contradictory views are expressed. But when a Gnani shows there is no second, there is no production, and the contradictions do not arise at all, when the ultimate thing is consciousness alone. Thus consciousness is ultimate truth or Brahman.

The dualists’ arguments are based on false self (ego or waking entity) and false experience (mind or waking or dream or universe)    To show the weakness of the position of dualistic view point.  They at their wits end to explain.

Existence cannot be a cause and effect at the same time, from the point of view of the dualists, but deeper self-search shows the Existent is no-two and causality can’t rise at all. Dualistic theory says that whatever was in the cause was also in the effect. They say that the gold brick, the gold medal, the gold ornaments --are in the seed--the gold. Deeper self-search reveals the fact that, if cause and effect are one what is the difference between the two?

The logic holds good for the practical purpose in the practical life (waking). Soul-centric reasoning leads to non- dualistic self-awareness.

With Love & respect

Santthosh

Adyathmic discussion-355 (Miracles)

Dear Santhosh.

It seems that "A Course In Miracles" backs up everything you say. You may be right and I may be wrong.? Sorry I was so argumentative. Lots of love to you.

Dearest Trev ,

As per my conviction:

Only on dualistic point of view the arguments are possible.  In non- dual reality there is no second thing exists other than the formless soul, which is present in the form of consciousness. That is:  I & you and the world are one in essence. Thus there is no second thing exists other than the essence, which is present in the form of consciousness.

Miracles are mere Ideas. And ideas are Illusory in their nature. These ideas too are consciousness, (the soul, the innermost self is present in the form of consciousness) and hence no miracle really occurs. Only when one sees all individuals, especially himself as imagined ideas, can he rise to see them later as consciousness. Thus there are two stages. One must first see himself as illusory before he sees others and the world as illusory.

Miracles deals within the duality. It is concerned with objective reality. It is not concerned with subjective reality. The miracles do not exist outside the self (soul) but they have a psychological existence and that psychological existence. The psychological existence is nothing to do with the ultimate truth or Brahman. So the first thing to be understood is that are part of the illusory existence where man and his experience of the world are reality.

The miracles happen within the duality. Without the duality there is no miracle. The miracles and the performer of the miracle, and the one who is watching the miracle and the world were the miracles takes place are one in essence.   That essence is consciousness.  The consciousness (soul) is the innermost self.

Just as (the delusion) of the serpent does not exist in the rope in all the three periods of time (past, present, and future), so the universe (waking experience) does not exist in the formless soul, the innermost self, which is the non-dual One.

Being of the nature of awareness alone, there is not inertness in the formless soul, the innermost self. Being of the nature of Truth, there is not a non-truth to the formless soul, the innermost self. Being of the nature of awareness, there is no ignorance in the formless soul, the innermost self.

It is through ignorance that the universe (waking) shines as reality .Whoever acquires Self-knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana is free from experiencing the birth, life, death and the world as reality.

The Advaitic formula, to be successively realized, is: “the world is unreal; Brahman is real; the world is Brahman.” This is the vision of non-duality. Sage Sri, Sankara affirmed a progression of points of view depending on the stage of one’s practice.

From the standpoint of the waking entity the universe is a reality from the standpoint of the soul, the innermost self, the universe is mere illusion created out of consciousness. When wisdom dawns then one realizes the whole universe is consciousness. The dualistic view is possible only in ignorance. At the dawn of Self-knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana there is only non-dualistic view in the midst of duality because the whole universe is consciousness. Thus all the contents of the universe are also consciousness. Thus form, time and space are mere illusion created out of consciousness. If the form time and space are consciousness than the experience birth, life and death also consciousness.

Thus one has to make duality into Nonduality by a perfect understanding of ‘what is truth’ and ‘what is untruth’ in order realized the ultimate truth or Brahman or Christ.

That is why:

Gospel Thomas logian 22:- Jesus saw infants being suckled.  He said to his disciples, “These infants being suckled are like those who enter the kingdom.”

They said to him, “Shall we then, as children, enter the kingdom?”

Jesus said to them,  “When you make the two one, and when you make the inside like the outside  and the outside like the inside, and the above like the below, and when you make the male and the female one and the same, so that the male not be male nor the female is female; and when you fashion eyes in the place of an eye,  and a hand in place of a hand, and a foot in place of a foot, and a likeness in place of a likeness; then will you enter the kingdom.”

With lots of love
Santthosh.

Advaita is the next step higher than Buddhism because it gives the missing reason***

Everything is consciousness, which Sage Sri Sankara declared 1200 years back –everything is Atman because Atman is present in the form of the consciousness.

Sage Sri Goudpada says that: - The merciful Veda teaches karma and Upasana to people of lower and middling intellect, while Jnana is taught to those of higher intellect.

Buddhism has not proved the truth of Non-duality.  There is no doubt Buddha pointed out the unreality of the world. He told people they were foolish to cling to it. But he stopped there. He came nearest to Advaita in speech but not to Advaita fully.

The distinction between Sage Sri, Sankara’s Advaita and Vijnanavadin Buddhism is that the former is mentalism i.e. mind is the real, whereas the latter is idealism, i.e. ideas are real. Advaitins follow the former.

Buddhism did not graduate its teaching to suit people of varying grades; hence its failure to affect society in Asia.

Buddha as a constructive worker committed an error in failing to give the masses a religion, something tangible they could grasp something materialistic, if symbolic that their limited intellect could take hold of, in addition to his ethics and philosophy. Here Sri Sage Sri, Sankara was wiser and gave religion; such as Bhakti, worship etc.--to the ignorant masses, as well as wisdom to those of higher intellect.

The Advaita Sage, Sri, Sankara gave religious, ritual or dogmatic instruction to the populace, but pure philosophy only to the few who could rise to it. Hence, the interpretation of his writings by commentators is often confusing because they mix up the two viewpoints. Thus, they may assert that ritual is a means of realizing Brahman, which is absurd.

Buddha's teachings that all life is misery belong to the relative standpoint only. For you cannot form any idea of misery without contrasting it with its opposite, happiness. The two will always go together. Buddha taught the goal of cessation of misery, i.e. peace, but took care not to discuss the ultimate standpoint for then he would have had to go above the heads of the people and tell them that misery itself was only an idea, that peace even was an idea (for it contrasted with peacelessness). That the doctrine he gave out was a limited one, is evident because he inculcated compassion. Why should a Buddhist sage practice pity? There is no reason for it.

Advaita is the next step higher than Buddhism because it gives the missing reason, viz. unity, non-difference from others, and because it explains that it used the concept of removing the sufferings of others, of lifting them up to happiness, only as we use one thorn to pick out another, afterwards throw both away. Similarly, Advaita discards both concepts of misery and happiness in the ultimate standpoint of non-duality, which is indescribable.

Buddhists say that a thing exists only for a moment, and if that thing has still got some of the substance from which it was produced, how then can they deny that its cause is continuing in the effect; hence its existence is more than a moment. Vedanta is concerned with whether it is one and the same thing which has come into being or has it come out of nothing.

The world is both real and unreal. It is real because it is a manifestation of the consciousness but is unreal, in the sense, that it is not absolute and eternal like consciousness itself.

People's approach is more practical, and they stuck with the reality of the world, they take it as real. That is why all the confusion.
