One cannot know the truth until one knows the formless stuff

By : Santthoshkumaar Kumaar on Feb 03, 2011 | Views (32) | Responses (2)

Like bubbles in the sea, the universe arises in consciousness. One has to know consciousness is the true Self and it is one. One sees the world within the waking experience but he is unaware of the witness of the waking experience as a whole. The one which witnesses the dream as a whole without the physical apparatus, witnesses the waking experience as whole. But on the standpoint of the formless witness the three states are not really there. It is pure and non-dual.
One cannot know the truth until one knows the formless stuff from which the waking/dream is created out of. The goal of pursuit of truth is to realize the true self and the nature of the true self.
The witness is changeless. However formless witness does not have to know that it is changeless since it is pure consciousness and it is in awareness of itself. And therefore it need not have to know that it is changeless since it is ever pure. The mind or universe being matter, by itself cannot know, since it is matter. The knower of the matter is not the matter but the formless consciousness.
The one who has to realize self is not the matter but the self the witness, which is in the form of consciousness. This knowledge can be got deeper investigation through reason based on the true self, which is consciousness. One has to keep churning again and again until one become firm in his conviction.
Those who say one can become like Brahman, or one with Brahman, or approach Brahman, , realize Brahman--all these are dualistic errors.
When scriptures say: - "That thou art" the meaning is that one must make an effort to know that Atman itself is Brahman or ultimate truth. Atman is in the form of consciousness is there always. One has got it, there is nothing new to be acquired, only have the sharpness to grasp and understand it, when told about it. But there is a difference between understanding and realization. Effort is required for this understanding only, whereas once understood no special effort is needed to remember his understanding: until then he only has an idea of Atman, he only partially understands it. But once he thoroughly grasp what it is and that all these things are Atman or consciousness, he will then constantly find it present everywhere without further effort, because he will perceive ultimate truth by understanding, even in the midst of worldly existence.
For when there is only one thing (consciousness) known, there is nothing to change, nothing to appear or disappear; when one speaks of remembering or forgetting consciousness that implies he believe in the existence of something else, i.e. a second thing, which is to be remembered. That would show he has not known that all is one. But knowing it, there is no second, consequently no intermittent perception of consciousness, but a permanent effortless understanding that it alone is.
The non-duality is the highest truth because it is impossible to contradict it. So long as there are two, one seeing another, man seeing something other than his-self, there is duality and not finality.
No one has seen anyone else impose the limitations and illusions of the world on his mind. Therefore one must conclude that they are self-imposed. Self is infinite but in dream it impose the limitation on itself in the form of an animal which it sees there but which is only created out of consciousness. Similarly in waking it impose other limitations in the form of other objects and persons, everything is really consciousness the true self. Therefore constantly reflect and practice this exercise: viz. "Self is not limited by the body, but the self, which is in the form of consciousness, pervades all the three states therefore it is unlimited." Thus it is erroneous to confine self to the physical entity alone.

Dear Ram Ramji
Pranams
Thank you for your wisdom. I respect your views.
This Ataman cannot be attained by the study of the Vedas, or by intelligence, or by much hearing of sacred books. It is attained by him alone whom It chooses. To such a one Atman reveals Its own form.[Katha Upanishad Ch-II -23-P-20]

My views are based on ultimate standpoint holding the consciousness as self. As per my conviction derived from deeper inquiry, analysis and reasoning:-

The physical existence is reality on the base of physical self. Whatever one feels as a person is reality within the physical existence [universe]. If physical existence is taken as reality then there is no meaning in seeking truth because he has accepted the physical existence as truth. Once physical existence is accepted as reality then the experiences within the physical existence prevail as reality.

My point is we have to view our life from ultimate point of view, then only we become aware its illusory nature.

The nature of things necessarily unpreventable and uncontrollable when one regards world as world of diversity. Only when one is able to base his-self from ultimate standpoint and views the experience of diversity [mind] as consciousness only, then he becomes aware of their unreal nature of the physical existence or mind.

One, who has realized that existence and non-existence and change are in the nature of things, easily finds repose, being unperturbed and free from ignorance. The pain and pleasure exist as reality because of having the idea of two [duality]. To get rid of the reality of the pain and pleasure one has to find the formless substance of the duality [mind] to realize the whole diversity is created out of single substance, which is consciousness. Realizing the consciousness as ultimate truth, one becomes aware of the unreal nature of the mind, which appears as waking or dream [duality] and disappears as deep sleep [nonduality] .

Serious Seekers who desirous to know the truth, for them nothing bring contentment other then acquiring the self-knowledge. For one who becomes aware of the fact that, the self is not physical but consciousness becomes aware of the fact that, the physical existence [illusion] has no base, and its reality is in illusory in its nature.

Our individual life is nothing to do with ultimate truth. The individual life is reality within the waking or dream. The three states are mere illusion on the ultimate standpoint. The ultimate truth, which is consciousness, is the substance and witness of the illusion and it is within the illusion and it is always apart and eternal.

As person perceiving the world one thinks he is born in this world and world existed prior to him, this conviction makes him physical oriented, thus he views and judges the worldview on the physical base therefore his understanding is limited to the physicality.

Deeper inquiry reveals the fact that, the self is not physical but it is formless [consciousness]. On the base of formless [consciousness] as self, one becomes unreal nature of the mind, which appears as waking or dream. Thus, the waking is as unreal as dream.

When man his world are within the illusion and all his experiences are happenings within the illusion. Until one thinks the physical self as real self, he is bound to be in the realm of duality. The one which knows itself as body with the name is not the body but it is consciousness. When the consciousness withdraws itself then there is neither body, nor the name, nor the world exists. And consciousness alone prevails as nondual existence.

Where is the body, where is mind, where is the world; the void; or despair in the true self, which the taintless soul or consciousness. They are or have becomes consciousness.

One thinks there is mind when he has thoughts, but when thoughts are not considered different from the consciousness, which is the true self, then where is the division into, waking, dream and deep sleep etc.

Void implies to duality: the universe may not exist but the thought of the second is there. If one knows there is Void [emptiness/nothingness], then there is something there to be known and know. They are or have become consciousness.

What are scriptures, what is self-knowledge, what is mind without the objects, what is contentment, and where is desirelessness for the formless soul/true self, which is ever devoid of sense of duality.

What is knowledge? What is ignorance? What is the ego? What is duality? What is mind? What is bondage? What is liberation? What is definableness to the formless self/soul, which is in the form of consciousness?

All these appearances are mere mirage, which come and go; hence meaningless to the formless soul/true self.

The ego based knowledge is not ultimate knowledge because ego based knowledge is dualistic knowledge based on the object [body] as subject. But in non-dualistic Knowledge whatever seems to exist also is consciousness; therefore there is no scope for the existence of the second thing.

What is past karmas? What is liberation –in this life? and what is that liberation at death? for the birth- less soul, which is ever formless.

Nearest state to understand the soul by itself is to eliminate mentally waking and dream as in deep sleep. Once this is grasped one has to understand everything is consciousness, which is the true self.

What is the doer or the enjoyer? What is cessation of thoughts or rising of thoughts? What is immediate perception and its result to, the formless soul, which is ever impersonal. A Gnani is the one who is never afraid of thinkng and knowing all his individual experience and the world to be consciousness.

What is the world and what is meant by the aspirant for liberation; what is contemplative and what is man of knowledge; what the self is and what liberated self to the formless soul, which is the non-dual essence.

When we analyze the dream experience we find the dream entity, dream world with all people in it appeared as a whole, and the dream reality lasted until waking experience appeared. When one tries to know the truth of his true existence in waking through inquiry, analysis and reasoning, one becomes aware of the fact that, the self is not physical but it is formless soul, which is in the form of consciousness which is the essence of the three states from which the three states are made. Thus the illusions of the three states are made of one single substance, which is consciousness. By realizing the formless substance, which is consciousness as self, the ignorance vanishes and one become aware of the fact that the three states are mere illusion on the standpoint of the formless substance ,which is also the witness of the three states.

When one realizes the soul as the true self:-

What are projection and retraction, what are end and means; what are failure and success to the formless soul, which is formless and nondual in its nature. The mirage appears and merges back into its essence is not an appearance at all.

What is the knower, the means of knowledge, the object of knowledge; what is anything or nothing to the soul which is ever formless. Knower, knowledge, object, thing, nothing or any word one may utter is after all they are the words and words have meaning only within the mirage. The consciousness is ever present in all the three states but as a person, one is unconscious of the consciousness because he thinks the body as his self.

When all knowing, known and knower are simultaneously mental as in dream what else is there to trouble about understanding them. Because of considering the waking experience as reality one is incapable of understanding and assimilating the nondual truth.

What is the distraction? What is the concentration, dullness ad delusion, happiness and sorrow to the formless soul, which is ever actionless.

As a person one may be drawn to observe his body and the world, but the Gnani is not disturbed by because they all are consciousness to him.

The physical attributes are nothing to do with the soul/self wrongly; all the attributes belong to the ego not the soul. Identifying the physical attribute to the soul is the cause of the ignorance.
What is relative? What is absolute happiness and misery to the formless soul, which is ever devoid of thought and activity?
If anything has a meaning it is only in duality. Happiness and sorrow are the nature of duality, which is mind, their differences therefore illusory on the standpoint of the formless soul, which is ultimate reality.

What is illusion? What is ignorance? What are birth, life and death? What is world? What is attachment and what is detachment to the soul/self, which is ever formless.

The mind and soul are one in essence ultimately. All argument about consciousness never touches it. The soul is not the ego in this particular body but principle which holds the whole physical existence [universe], which contains everyone and everything known and unknown. All words have no place and thoughts cannot reach. Even the thought of the soul or consciousness is just illusory and contradictory, because the thought and words belong to the world of duality.

What is activity or inactivity, liberation and bondage to the formless soul/self, which is ever immutable and indivisible. There is no division into nations, races and colours of kinds of men in wisdom. It is not enough to but one must always see the formless soul [consciousness] as self and the witness the witness of all the three states and always realize and practice it. Some people get glimpses of truth and lose it; so it must be established. Such fixidity is the goal.

What is instruction and scriptural injunction? What is disciple and guru? What indeed is object of life for the formless soul, which is absolute and free from limitation?

Life is with world. World is within the waking or dream, the illusory limitation. When there is no second other than consciousness, then what is there for the soul /self to attain? But when one thinks the self is physical, then there is various things he will want to get and so be trouble by their lack. Hence don’t wrongly imagine the self to be the body.

What is existence, nonexistence, unity or duality? What need us there to say more? Noting from the soul because whatever seems to emanate from it, is non-different from itself. There is no second thing other than the soul, which is in the form of consciousness. One should not mistake self [soul] for the ego.

Those who assert world is reality, are still in elementary stages of preliminary analysis. The world is reality within the waking experience but the waking experience is mere illusion. The same way the dream world was reality within the dream experience. The dream became unreal when waking took place same way waking becomes unreal when non-dual wisdom dawns.
With respect and regards
Santthosh

Since people use their accepted truth as yardstick, they will not be able know what is truth. They think they have mastered the whole Advaith philosophy or some teaching of great master but they will not be able to realize the nondual truth. Such people are like stagnant water collected in the pond, which stinks of their accumulated dross. They block the new knowledge to come in. Very few like you are fortunate to go to the ultimate end and realize it.

Discovering truth is one thing and Understanding and assimilating is another thing and realizing it is yet another thing.

The non-dual truth is very easy but very difficult to assimilate and realize it. The one who realizes the fact that, body and the universe are created out of consciousness, and then there is nothing else to know. By knowing this truth there is unity in diversity. There is no second thing exists other then consciousness. The diversity is mere mirage created out of consciousness.

Since, they are stuck with the idea that the body is made of flesh, bone and blood and universe is of the matter, they will be unable to accept their birth, life, death and world as illusion. By accepting the illusion as reality they will remain judging the worldview on the base of birth entity. Whereas, the true self is not the birth entity but it is the formless substance and witness [consciousness] of the illusory birth, life, death and world. For one who is aware of the consciousness as self, is also aware of the fact that, birth, life, death and world are mere illusion created out of consciousness.

Consciousness can never be destroyed, but it resolves back to its formless nondual true nature. Nothing is beyond or higher than the consciousness. – Mind and the soul [consciousness] are essentially one, as are the ocean and the waves. As long as illusion exists the separation exists. As long as separation exists duality will prevail as reality. So long the ignorance prevail, the birth, life, death and the world will remain as reality. But when one awaken into reality, all the reality of illusion cease forever.

Neither by Yoga, nor by scriptural studies, nor by action, nor by learning, but only by the realisation of one's identity with consciousness freedom is possible, and by no other means.

Lectures consisting of a shower of ornamental words, the skill in expounding the Scriptures or intellectual theories, and likewise erudition - these merely bring on a little personal enjoyment to the scholar, but are no good for freedom.

The study of the Scriptures is useless so long as the highest Truth is unknown, and it is equally useless when the highest Truth has already been known.

The Scriptures consisting of many words are a dense forest which merely causes the mind to ramble. Hence one should earnestly set about knowing the true nature of the Self, which is consciousness.

Most seekers have accepted some philosophy as truth or some teaching as truth. Just by studying teachings of Raman Maharshi and Nisargadutta Maharaja, but one has to find the obstacles in their teaching, which blocks one from realizing the truth. The truth is easier without any teaching. Mostly people are sentimentally and emotionally get involved with their teachings and blindly accept whatever said in those teaching and refuse to verify the facts. This sheepish mentality is greatest obstacle in pursuit of truth, because it makes one more and more egocentric, not soul centric.

In the scriptures, it says that the world is both real and unreal. It is real because it is a manifestation of consciousness, but is unreal, in the sense, that it is not absolute and eternal like consciousness itself.

Most of the teachers and thinkers approach was more practical, and they have stuck with the reality of the world, they took it as real.

Namaskar,
it was a fantastic reading. We should accept any thought by our own realization.Until we realize it, we can't understand it's base and essence. blindly believing a guru or a thought can satisfy a mind but not the soul. And the seekers still remains in illusion.A thought is not generated by anyone, one comes across it.So, let it come before us or seek for it conciously.we should not force ourselves to assimilate a thought just on the base that it is being said or promoted by a famous name or scriptures. otherwise accumulating thoughts without realization simply creates a kind of ego by scholarhood and leads us to the same illusion where one was before the accumulation.

Dear Sukant Ranjanji,
Namaskar

Thank you for your comment and response.

Only when one finds whatever he has read and understood of any teaching and philosophies is inadequate or useless to quench his spiritual thirst then he tries to find it on his own. Buddha also rejected religion, scriptures concept of god when he found them useless to realize the ultimate truth. The truth pursuit is personal journey and a journey of verification of facts.

No teachings are required in pursuit of truth. Ultimate Truth has to be discovered ,assimilated and realized by deeper inquiry, analysis and reasoning. Ultimate Truth can be only found by through reason based on the soul as self. People throng to teaching and bookish knowledge , not to inquire, analyze and reason.

Many sounds a strong convictioned, and their knowledge is based only on the teachings and others opinions. They support their arguments with references from philosophical books or scriptures or the thoughts of the great thinkers. Seeker has to remember for every strong argument there will be a counter argument. The truth is always based on the formless; therefore, what is the use of arguing on the form based understanding, which is the cause of ignorance. In ignorance one ignores the Truth itself.

Those who get involved in intellectual debates, which are based on the form as self, will get only hallucinated realization based on speculation.

Many people think and discuss on the authors of the books or teacher. As seekers of truth one has to know where the author or teacher has got stuck in assimilating the self-knowledge for their own research. There is no need to criticize any authors and teacher. If one bases his reasoning on the soul as self then he will know how far they have reached in their understanding and assimilation of the non-dual truth.

The value of Self –Knowledge isn’t to be found in books. Those are just the external appearances of self; they're not the realization of “Self” as proof. If one realizes the “Self” then he realizes the formless substance of the mind, and he sees the truth in it. When the truth becomes apparent then it cuts off the stream of delusion. Their writings are pointers to truth, not truth-in-itself. That's why merely believing in their books is pointless.

“Some of the great thinkers think that, there is no difference between the ‘thinker’ and ‘thought’; the ‘observer’ and the ‘observed’ emphasizing the correlation between the internal and external worlds, for a complete understanding of Truth. This understanding would bring about a radical transformation of the mind, by the mutation in our brain cells and would change our perception of the world.”
But they fail to understand the thinker and the thought are part of the illusion or duality. There is neither thinker nor thought in reality. The thought will not rise without the form; therefore the thought will rise only when the physical self is present. The physical self is present only when the waking experience or dream is present. The waking or dream is present only when the mind is present. Therefore, there is a need to understand all these facts, before moving ahead in pursuit of truth.

When the self is not physical but is is formless, then there is no question of basing it on brain cells psychology because they are based on physical self. The physical self is false self . If thinker and thought of the dream and observer and observed of the dream disappears along with the dream. Same way the waking ‘thinker’ and ‘thought’; the ‘observer’ and the ‘observed’ disappears in deep sleep. It is not the waking entity which is aware of the coming and going of the three states. The formless witness of the three states is apart from the three states. The three states are unreal on the standpoint of the formless witness of the three states. And the formless witness is also the substance of the three states. Therefore, the one which is aware of the three states is not physical; therefore, question of mutation of brain cells does not arise.

Since the thinker and the thought exist with in the duality and thinker and the thought both are object to the formless witness. Therefore, one need to understand the fact that the subject [true self/spirit] is formless and the object is form [three states]. The subject and the object is one in essence because the object is created out of the formless subject.
Since, scientific inventions are based on the physical self and physical existence; there invention will not go beyond the physical existence. And they can only discover the truth of the fragments within the consciousness, not of the whole. Until and unless they discover the fact that, the self is not physical, their understanding will not go beyond physicality. When the self is not physical but it is the formless spirit, searching truth within the physical body or brain cells is of no use.

To assimilate the self-knowledge effectively, seeker needs to be receptive. He has to have patience and humility and allow the person to speak freely express himself about the Self-Knowledge, without hindrance or interruption. In return, seeker will receive free expression and then, try to grasp what he is saying. Seeker should not be judge on the base of his accumulated knowledge and simply argue on his own point of view. Seeker has to accept others views, if finds them un-contradictable truth.

Seeker has to verify the validity of all claims by using his own reason. Seeker has to get all the doubts cleared by questioning patiently, and point out all the doubts and confusion with humility. Argument is greatest obstacle in pursuit of truth, therefore never indulge in arguments. Therefore, discussion with humility is the way towards the ultimate truth. This will enable him to provide understanding and to see the fellow seekers perspective that is not to say that, he has to agree to their point of view, however it will offer or enable one to consider another option. And it helps seeker to think deeper when he is not satisfied with the answers and find answer on his own reasoning, till un- contradictable answer is found.

If one can truly understand “what is Mind”? “What is substance of the mind?” it would lead to resolving a lot of perhaps unnecessary trouble, and conflict.

If we look closely at the nature of the mind, what it is really, how it has come into being, and what constitutes it, then it will become clear of the fact that, mind is mere illusion; the formless substance and witness of the mind, which is the formless spirit, is real and eternal.

It is impossible to get Vedic moksha by glorifying gods, gur

By : Santthoshkumaar Kumaar on Feb 07, 2011 | Views (39) | Responses (4)

The question arises as to what is Santana Dharma? It can safely be said that it is the Vedic religion based on Vedas alone. The Hinduism as we find today is not pure Vedic religion it mixer of different ideologies accepted by the people time to time. Thus the Hinduism is hotchpotch mixer of many ideologies.

Hinduism is not religion it is way of living of different caste and creeds following their own regional cultures and traditions in different parts of India. All the so called Hindus are divided by caste, sub-castes and creeds with in the Hinduism. Thus the pure Santana Dharma or Vedic religion is no longer in existence in its ancient grandeur as it was prior to the Buddhism and Jainism.

As one goes deeper in to the annals of the religion one becomes aware of the fact that, Santana Dharma has no beginning. Nobody can say when it started. It is without a beginning and so without an end. It is eternal and everlasting. That which has a beginning, has also an end, as all beginnings have an end also.

Santana Dharma has no founder. All religions are known by their founders or prophets but this is not the case with Santana Dharma. It neither has any prophet to begin it nor any book or authorized scripture told by the prophet who got revelation.

If Santana Dharma has no founder but all so called Hindu religions are known by their founders or sages, therefore Hinduism cannot be the pure Vedic or Santana Dharma. Thus, it proves that, the religions founded by the Sages after 7th century onwards are not the pure Santana Dharma or Vedic religion.

As one peeps in to the annals of the all history of all religions, one becomes aware of the fact that, the religions with scripters have got the largest number of followers and those without scriptures are rare and scarce. In both these class of religions, one finds that the truth is the result of experience of a particular person – Jesus, Prophet Mohammed or Buddha and Sri Sankara, Guru Nanak, Mahavira. All of them experienced truth and that they preached. All religions are built upon direct experience of this experience. But there is a difference.

Others have the founders of this experience known as the first founder of the religion and after their name the religion is known. The other difference is that they now claim that the experience, the prophets had, is now no longer possible. So one have to rely on "Belief”.

The experience of the scientists says that if one experience is possible, it will be repeated eternally. This is the Law of Nature. What once takes place, takes place often and always.

As one goes deeper into the annals of religious history, he becomes aware of the fact that, Santana Dharma differs with other religions on this point. Santana Dharma is not based on spiritual experience of any single individual or any such revelation. It is based on realization, on intuition, and experience of a number of seers, sages and mystics who realized the Infinite and were illuminated. It does not owe its origin to any one person or prophet nor does it adhere to any papal authority or dogma.

It does not built around one man as its centre though it is not opposed to philosophies build around personalities and prophets. It believes in scientific precision and experiments to arrive at truth any time and many times, so it believes in free expression of thoughts and inquiry into the fundamentals even. It is therefore a tolerant religion, granting freedom of Inquiry and Expression, seeking evidence.

Looking in to all these facts one can conclude that the Santana Dharma is an eternal and everlasting humanitarian religion of all mankind. It is not limited to the teaching of any particular people or class of people or any form of worship. It is a comprehensive way, a law of Being ever praying to be with the Absolute.

In this respect, the present Hinduism with its diverse caste and creed, dogmas, rituals, beliefs and worships are not purely Vedic Religion but it is hotchpotch of ideologies adopted from other ideologies and seers experiences.

As one goes in deeper in annals of religious history, one also finds the oldest spiritual writing known to mankind in the Vedas about 6000 BC, orally transmitted for most of history and written down in Sanskrit. It makes them the world’s longest and most ancient revealed scripture of Santana Dharma.

Vedas are concerned with wisdom; what is life about; what does death means, what the human being is, what is the nature of the Absolute that sustains us, and the cosmos etc…..
Sanatana Dharma believes that there is nothing that is not God. The Lord is enshrined in the hearts of all. God permeates everything and nothing permeates Him.

The famous peace invocation of Isa Upanishad says:-
Om Purna- madah, purna-midam purnat-purnam-udacyate
Purnaysa purna-madaya purna-meva-vasisyate

Which means:- All this is full /from fullness, fullness comes

When fullness is taken from fullness/ fullness still remains.

This belief is all- comprehensive and all- absorbing. There is nothing that is not God.
This truth has been told by the seers. This is the only truth but is described by the people differently.

The message of Sanatana Dharma goes that Akem Satya; Vipraha vividha Vadanti i.e. Truth is one but the people describe it in different ways. Those on journey to Eternity may differ but once reached there, all the differences sink into oneness.
The whole humanity has to arrive at this eternal truth one day.

Looking all these above aspect on can conclude the present Hindusim is modified to suit mass mind set by the sages by adopting ideology from other ideologies in the past is nothing to do with the pure Vedic religion or Santana Dharma.
Sanatana Dharma aims at making the whole world full of Aryas. It is not confined to the need of self-salvation alone. It has a missionary message too. It says, ’Kranvanto Viswam Aryam’ let the people of the world be made Arya i.e. gentle, righteous, and religious minded. The central point of Isa Upanishad is -- Renounce and enjoy. This has to be our aim of life.
Sanatana Dharma is a cosmopolitan religion. It wishes the happiness of the world. Man is essentially divine. There is divinity in every man. He has to realize it. Then alone the world can become a place to live in.

Sanatana Dharma says that:-

Sarve Bhavanti Sukhinah/ Sarve santu Niramayah
Sarve Bhadrani Pashyanti, Ma Kashchid Dukh Bhag Bhaveta.

It means: - Let everyone without distinction be happy. Let everyone be without any ailment. Let everyone look like Arya, noble and righteous. Let there be no one to have any share of sorrow or grief.

This is the philosophy of Sanatana Dharma -- a religion of all religions and all mankind. Sanatana Dharma stresses upon action. It believes in theory of Karma. The Upanishad says, ’you are what your driving desire is, as your desire is, so is your will, as your will is, so is your deed. As your deed is, so is your destiny.’ Thus we create our own destiny through thought and action. So the message goes that there is no joy in the finite, there is joy only in the Infinite. Nothing can satisfy us but reunion with our real Self which in fact is attainment of Sat-Chit-Anand. Self-realization is in becoming immortal. It does not mean an everlasting life but it stands for a state that is beyond death and life alike.

Santana Dharma believes in the immortality of soul. It inhabits one body after another according to Karma in previous life, during its eternal journey to the Absolute till it is one with God. This is called belief in Reincarnation. It is not a fact that the individual dies with the death of the visible body. At death, the soul leaves the physical body and does not die. It gets into a subtle body called Astral on non-physical dimension. The forces which brought the body and personality into existence continue shaping its destiny after death and would do so till unison with the Absolute when one becomes free from the circle of birth and death.

When Yajurved says:
Translation 1.

They enter darkness, those who worship natural things (for example air, water, sun, moon, animals, fire, stone, etc).

They sink deeper in darkness those who worship sambhuti. (Sambhuti means created things, for example table, chair, idol etc.)
[Yajurved 40:9]

Translation 2.

"Deep into shade of blinding gloom fall asambhuti's worshippers. They sink to darkness deeper yet who on sambhuti are intent."

[Yajurveda Samhita by Ralph T. H. Giffith pg 538]

Translation 3.
"They are enveloped in darkness, in other words, are steeped in ignorance and sunk in the greatest depths of misery who worship the uncreated, eternal prakrti -- the material cause of the world -- in place of the All-pervading God, But those who worship visible things born of the prakrti, such as the earth, trees, bodies (human and the like) in place of God are enveloped in still greater darkness, in other words, they are extremely foolish, fall into an awful hell of pain and sorrow, and suffer terribly for a long time."
[Yajur Veda 40:9.]
So, Yajur Veda indicates that:-

They sink deeper in darkness those who worship sambhuti. (Sambhuti means created things, for example table, chair, idol etc [Yajurved 40:9]

Those who worship visible things born of the prakrti, such as the earth, trees, bodies (human and the like) in place of God are enveloped in still greater darkness, in other words, they are extremely foolish, fall into an awful hell of pain and sorrow, and suffer terribly for a long time." [Yajur Veda 40:9.]

When the religion of the Veda knows no idols then why so many gods and goddesses with different form and name are being propagated as Vedic gods. Why these conceptual gods are introduced when Vedic concept of god is free from form and attributes.

Who introduced concept of god with attributes and attributeless gods, when Yajur Veda says: - those who worship visible things, born of the prakrti, such as the earth, trees, bodies (human and the like), in place of God are enveloped in still greater darkness. Therefore, all these add-ons proves that the form and attribute based concepts are introduced by some sages of the past with new belief system and code of conducts in the name of Vedas.

Sruti is made the final or exclusive authority in apara Vidya and that for supporting the tenet of the CAUSAL relation or creatorship of Brahman, Nirguna Brahman = the "Absolute beyond qualities," which can be defined only in a negative way. For the Shankarian school = the Ultimate Reality, higher than the Lord. i.e. of Saguna or apara Brahman ... The support of Scriptural Revelation is, therefore, absolutely necessary for this hypothesis of cosmology, this Saguna or apara (= inferior) Brahman, but not for the absolute truth of Nirguna Brahman. Therefore, all the add-ons and attribute based knowledge, which are inferior, have to be bifurcated and excluded to know the ultimate truth.

Gaudapada says that:- The merciful Veda teaches karma and Upaasana to people of lower and middling intellect, while Jnana is taught to those of higher intellect.

This clearly indicates that religion, which is based on individual conduct, prescribes karma and Upaasana to people of lower and middling intellect, therefore religion is for the lower intellect. And wisdom is for those are capable of inquiring into their own existence to know and realize the ultimate truth, which is Brahman.

Brahman is considered the all-pervading consciousness, which is the basis of all the animate and inanimate entities and material. (brahmano hi pratisthaham, Bhagavad Gita 14.27)

Sri, Sankara’s notion of Maya, the cosmic illusion, which must be transcended in order to realize the truth of Brahman, which means ultimate truth.

If Brahman is considered the all-pervading consciousness then, it is necessary to realize, the consciousness as self, which pervades all the three states, to realize the fact that, there is no second thing exists other the consciousness. Thus, consciousness [Ataman] is ultimate truth [Brahman].

As indicated in ISH Upanishads: - By worshipping gods and goddesses you will go after death to the world of gods and goddesses. But will that help you? The time you spend there is wasted, because if you were not there you could have spent that time moving forward towards Self-knowledge, which is your goal. In the world of gods and goddesses you cannot do that, and thus you go deeper and deeper into darkness.

It clearly indicates that:-If the human goal is to acquire Self-Knowledge then why one has to indulge in rituals and glorifying the conceptual gods, goddesses and gurus to go in to deeper darkness. Instead spend that time moving forward towards Self-knowledge, which is one’s prime goal.

Since it is eternal and infinite, it comprises the only truth. The goal of Vedic religion, through the various yogas, is to realize that the consciousness (Atman) is actually nothing but Brahman.

The Vedic pantheon of gods is said, in the Vedas and Upanishads, to be only higher manifestations of Brahman. For this reason, "ekam sat" (all is one), and all is Brahman. Thus, the goal is to realize Atman (consciousness). If Atman (consciousness) is nothing but Brahman and by realizing Atman [consciousness] as Brahman [ultimate truth] is truth realization or Self-Realization , then there is no need to follow religion, study scriptures or glorifying gods or gurus and follow the path of doubts and confusion by losing oneself in the present form of Hinduism, which contradicts the Vedic ideology. As declared by Vedas and Upanishads: - the main aim of human life is to acquire

Self-Knowledge. Therefore , the time one spends in religious ritual, glorifying gods and gurus is wasted. One should utilize that same time to acquire Self-knowledge, which is his prime goal.

The Sruti itself says: "This Atma is NOT to be attained by a study of the Vedas. [Katha Upanishad I, 2, 23.]

Why study of scriptures when Shruti itself declares,” This Atman is not to be attained by study of the Vedas.” Thus the people who are after Vedic moksha will not attain it through hindu orthodoxy. As Vedas declare it is beyond Vedas. Where Veda ends [VEDA- ANTH] there is moksha. Thus, the present Hinduism, which is mother of all hotchpotch ideology, is not the means for Self-Knowledge, because it is full of orthodox conduct, belief, theoretical dogmas based prescription for moksha[freedom].

The self-knowledge is the prime goal of human life as declared by Vedas, which can be attained by knowing the ultimate truth or Brahman.

Self-knowledge cannot be attained by study of the Vedas and intellectual understanding or by bookish knowledge. Therefore there is no use of studying the Vedas and other scriptures in order to acquire the non-dual wisdom. That is why Buddha rejected the scriptures, and even Sri, Sankara indicated that, the ultimate truth lies beyond religion, concept of god and scriptures.

There is only one Reality to be known, the same for all seekers, but the ways to it, are hidden by the religion. Self-discovery is the only way, towards non-dual Absolute without any religious doctrines, which will help the seekers to unfold the mystery of the illusion in which we all are searching the truth of our true existence.

A beautiful article. However, one may try, cannot aim for the ultimate goal without preparing himself for it. Hence, various Upasanas, reading of scriptures etc are absolutely necessary to prepare Body, Mind and Soul to receive the Highest truth. An unprepared person would get confused and lost otherwise. For a highly evolved soul as Adi Sankaracharya, Ramana Maharishi, Upasanas, Sadhanas are not required. But for the millions others it is absolutely necessary.

Dear Sharat Sahu
Thank you for your comment.

The ultimate truth has nothing to do with Scriptures and it is independent of scriptures. The point is: though it is taught by the Vedas, it does not require any belief in the infallibility of Vedas; in other words even if an individual or some other religion were to propose the same thing, a person with an open mind would come to the same conclusion that there is a fourth state, that it is Brahman - and that it is the same as the self.

People think that the enlightenment is about the experience of the timeless, formless, space less unmanifested dimension and it is possible by transcending ego. They also think that the universe is born millions of years ago and the universe erupted from the big void, from noting ness. But these ideas are mere speculation based on the false self within the false experience.

Where there is experience then there is duality. Where there is duality then there is always illusion. Where there is illusion then there is always ignorance. Where there is ignorance there is always ego. Where there is ego the false hood experienced as reality. Therefore, getting rid of the falsehood in its totality is necessary to realize the reality. Thus, transcending ego alone one cannot gets non-dual reality, the whole false hood, which is in the form of mind or universe has to transcended mentally in order realize the ultimate reality.

It is erroneous to say that only by transcending the ego; one is able to experience formless, timeless and space-less unmanifested dimension. It is wrong to say that the universe erupted from the big void, from nothingness. All this are mere imaginations based on the false self.

It is traditional belief that, if one meditates; he assumes no position in relationship with thoughts. One transcends his thought process. So when one transcends thoughts, he transcends mind, one transcend time. But all these belief based theoretical practices are not wisdom. Only through wisdom one is able to realize the ultimate truth which is beyond illusory form, time space which is in the form of universe.

Those who lack the intelligence to discriminate between formless witness [subject] and three states [object] will not be able to grasp what is real and what is unreal. Both subject and object are consciousness, not subject alone.

The truth can never change. The nature of truth is, it can never be changed under any circumstances. It may be misrepresented. It must apply to the whole of existence, to the whole of the universe. It is in the object [three states] alone that one has all changes, as deeper analysis points out.
It is possible to realize the ultimate truth without the scriptures, if the seeker is serious and has intense urge to know the truth.

We start from duality, it is Truth for us. The imagination of duality or non-duality can not help in knowing God. However if we really wish to know (not for discussion/arguments/ego-satisfaction etc) God helps us and we start to notice co-incidences...the path is opened. Gradually present Truth moves towards the ultimate Truth as we start becoming no-body within and every-body outside.
