Individual actions and conducts [Karma] are not the means to acquire Self-Knowledge***

If one thinks Advaitic truth is the ultimate truth, then one has to drop all theories based on the physical body [ego] as self, because Advaitic truth is based on the soul, which is the true self.

By accepting the karma theory, one is  accepting the false self, as the real self, and world as reality, therefore there is no need for self inquiry “Who am ‘I’ “, because one has  accepted the present physical identity and world as reality.  Self inquiry makes one realize the fact that, the ‘Self’ is not the body. After knowing the fact that the  self is not the body, then it is erroneous to think again as the body as self, and holding the body based theories as reality.  Thus, the karma theory becomes a biggest obstacle in the path of inquiry and truth, because it does not allow the seeker to cross the threshold of duality.

The physical body and the world which exist only in waking or dream or duality are impermanent and illusory in nature, because they appear and disappear as mind. The soul which is the formless substance and  the witness of the duality is permanent. Therefore, whatever is seen known and believed and experienced as real within the waking also is as real as a dream.

Sage Sri, Sankara in Aparokshanubhuti:-

   88. When the whole universe, movable and immovable, is known to be Atman, and thus the existence of everything else is negated, where is then any room to say that the body is Atman?

   89. O enlightened one, pass your time always contemplating on Atman while you are experiencing all the results of Prarabdha; for it ill becomes you to feel distressed.

   90. The theory, one hears of from the scripture, that Prarabdha does not lose its hold upon one even after the origination of the knowledge of Atman, is now being refuted.

   91. After the origination of the knowledge of Reality, Prarabdha verily ceases to exist, inasmuch as the body and the like become non-existent; just as a dream does not exist in waking.

   92. That Karma which is done in a previous life is known as Prarabdha (which produces the present life). But such Karma cannot take the place of Prarabdha (for a man of knowledge), as he has no other birth (being free from ego).

   93. Just as the body in a dream is superimposed (and therefore illusory), so is also this body. How could there be any birth of the superimposed (body), and in the absence of birth (of the body) where is the room for that (i.e., Prarabdha) at all ?

   94. The Vedanta texts declare ignorance to be verily the material (cause) of the phenomenal world just as earth is of a jar. That (ignorance) being destroyed, where can the universe subsist ?

   95. Just as a person out of confusion perceives only the snake leaving aside the rope, so does an ignorant person see only the phenomenal world without knowing the reality?

   96. The real nature of the rope being known, the appearance of the snake no longer persists; so the substratum being known, the phenomenal world disappears completely.

   97. The body also being within the phenomenal world (and therefore unreal), how could Prarabdha exist ? It is, therefore, for the understanding of the ignorant alone that the Shruti speaks of Prarabdha.

   98. “And all the actions of a man perish when he realizes that (Atman) which is both the higher and the lower”. Here the clear use of the plural by the Shruti is to negate Prarabdha as well.

   99. If the ignorant still arbitrarily maintains this, they will not only involve themselves into two absurdities, but will also run the risk of forgoing the Vedantic conclusion. So one should accept those Shrutis alone from which proceeds true knowledge.

The above proves that the karma is a reality only on the base of the false self, where one thinks body and the universes as reality. When one becomes aware of the fact that, the true self is formless soul, then the karma becomes part and parcel of illusion.   My point is that, if one accepts the karma theory as reality, he will never be able to come out of the ignorance. And ignorance makes him believe the cycle of birth, life and death as a reality.  Thus, the freedom which one is seeking will remain a distant dream. For the one who accepts the birth, life and death as a reality, Self-knowledge is impossible.

Thus, it is necessary for the seeker of truth to know the fact that, the body which is born, lives and dies is not the self. Since he is taking the body to be the self, he is experiencing the duality as reality.

As Sri, Sankara says:  When the whole universe, movable and immovable, is known to be Atman, and thus the existence of everything else is negated, where is then any room to say that the body is Atman.

If the body is not the self, then the karma theory has no meaning on the standpoint of the truth. Thus, no second thing exists other than soul or consciousness, therefore why to view the worldwide or [three states  on the standpoint of the body as self (ego) when the body (ego) is the false self, and the formless  soul or consciousness, the innermost  self.

Essence of Ashtavakra is: Realizing soul  or the consciousness as self, the liberation is possible in this very life right here and right now, not in the next life  or the next world.

The Religion, theories scriptures and concept of God are created as a  tool for conditioning the populace, to control the  individual mind. All religious injected theories make the religious believer  to self judge "what is good" and "what is evil", with the fear of conceptual God, who  in turn punish them, or reward them with good or bad life, in the next life and in the next world.  Such theories are based on the false self (ego or you) within the false experience (waking).    The  Religious founders believed this fear of God  helps to maintain peace and harmony in the society. Both the man and the world exist within the mind.  And  the mind is a myth on the standpoint of the soul, the innermost self.  Thus, all the theories based on the false self (you) has no value in the  Advaitic reality.

Mundaka Upanishad:- Not know any higher good. Having enjoyed their reward on the heights of heaven, gained by good works, they enter again this world or a lower one.
-First Mundaka -10-   Chapter I (Source: "the upanishads - a new translation" by swami nikhilananda in four volumes)

Therefore, Individual actions and conducts (Karma) are not the means to acquire Self-Knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana.

  • Even the religious based non-dualism is not the means for truth realization, because their preaching is based on the nonduality but their practice is based on dualistic view point. Therefore, it is difficult to get TRUTH –REALIZATION from conduct based orthodox non-dualism. Thus it looks like the real essence of non-dualism is lost or destroyed in the past by the orthodox oriented priest craft and propagated and injected only priest-crafted non-dualism, to the mass, the reason best known to the masters of the past. Therefore, it is impossible to come out of all these priest crafted confusions in one life time. Through orthodox non-dualism it is impossible to get truth realization.

There is no need to collect all these baggage of confusions, if one is seeking truth, nothing but truth. The guru is necessary only in religious and yogic paths, but guru is not necessary in pursuit of truth. Path of truth is a personal path and it is the path of verification. But in religion and yoga the verification is not allowed. Blind faith is main ingredient in belief system and yoga. Gurudom is playing with words because maybe the meaning is floating somewhere in between the spaces of words...

  • There are gifted prophets (who speak from the depths of themselves - what the God mind IS in its purest truth), who quote others - rarely - and who continue to pour forth jewels and precious pearls out of their mouths at an alarming rate........this is God's infinite flowing river that is flowing through every being, every bug, every bird's song......that flows easily and voraciously through a prophet's mouth......'an one who is not their own, but God's'....but few are able to recognize it or them...... This is how we know who is a prophet....Jesus, Buddha, Osho and others......speak from their own depths - with AUTHORITY -.....this is why we/you listen, there is something there that is fresh and authentic.

What is important for the 'enlightened' being and burgeoning master is cultivating a worthy 'listening' ear....trained upon the spiritual truths of the Gnanas in order to move ahead on the path to mastery and bliss..... without a keen sense of recognizing truth, one will fall prey to anyone who quotes only, but can offer no real depth from within them that has the same 'authority' that these other master's/avatars have spoken with........I believe that Santthosh Kumarr is one such individual.....
    peace and blessings to all.....pranam......pranam.......♥

  • Illusion means that one knows the unreality of a thing only when it disappears. When one knows these three states are continuously appearing and disappearing, he may perceive its unreality. As one goes deeper inquiry he becomes aware the consciousness is in process of changing every moment, to moment.

The experience of the Birth, life, death world are within the waking or dream. It is connected with the body of the waking or dream. Waking or dream comes and goes. But which sees the birth, life, death and the world of the waking or dream as whole is the consciousness, the innermost self. The innermost self, is immortal. –FORMLESS PATH

  • Knowledge does not destroy the world with in the waking; it only destroys its unreality—because everything is consciousness.

Knowledge of the dream world, which does not destroy the dream world; it shows that everything is mental or unreal.

Because of one’s attachment to the body, and his identification with it, he does not feel this waking to be unreal. Not having inquired one is unaware of the fact that the body and the world are within the waking/dream and waking/dream are of constantly changing in their nature. One has to take the Witness-attitude to see the three states as fleeting appearance.

Waking experience is continuously presenting with changing conditions. Whatever is within the waking experience may appear to be real and existent. It is a mistake to think that mental creations are seen to be unreal and non-existent. –FORMLESS PATH

  • Waking or dream are mere is only a seen/objects, no matter how exalted it be. Waking or dream never touches the formless witness, but formless witness remains always in the seen as its formless substance. It is erroneous to believe that the more one thinks, the more he will get. Thought remains as a thought and gives you back only a thought not truth. One has to become aware of the fact the thoughts arise only within the waking or dream. Thus one has to trace the source of the three states not the source of the thought to unfold the mystery of the duality.

One can only know an experience when one discriminate between it and the state of mind when it was nonexistent just as he knows a black by its contrast to white.

The only certain thing about the waking is that it is forever changing; it changes into deep sleep and deep sleep changes in to dream, no one can prevent this change it is happening on its own accord. In contrast to the three states, the soul or witness of the three states is the only thing of whose unchanging character one can be certain. Through the soul or witness one becomes aware about all the changes in consciousness, remaining itself relatively constant, as a standard of reference for them.

The term witness, Seer, Self is used in a non-dual sense, without reference to the three states witnessed, absolute awareness, not relative. –FORMLESS PATH

  • The three states which is an object to the formless witness [soul, the innermost self] is ever-changing but never the formless witness. The three states come and go, but that does not prove that one state produces or causes another.

If the previous state of consciousness has really vanished, memory of it would be impossible. Its disappearance into source or soul is no real disappearance. One only remembers that it has gone and come; that which perceives these states can alone be said to exist: That is the soul, the innermost self. One only relies on the formless witness or soul, and none has seen the birth or change of formless witness or soul. –FORMLESS PATH

  • Ego is physical entity within the waking or dream. The ego, body and world exist together and disappear together along with waking or dream. When one thinks of the "ego" alone he is in the grip of duality. The formless witness knows the appearance and disappearance of the waking/dream as a whole, not ego alone.

Trying to overcome the ego alone is impossible. One has to get rid of experience of duality, by mentally focusing the attention on the formless witness of the three states. The witnessed [three states] appears and disappears; the formless witness is never known to be appearing and disappearing. That which appears and disappears is not the permanent. –FORMLESS PATH

  • People think negating means negating the objects and they think that it is impossible to negate objects. “They are thinking negating the objects as a person within the waking experience. It is not so, it is the negating the three states, on the base of the formless witness/soul.

Since the three states are made of the same essence, they are non-different, but appear to change. The three states are of the same essence as soul/consciousness, is non-different from it but appears to change and be different from it. – FORMLESS PATH

  • One cannot say how the waking or dream has appeared; only that they are and they are in the mind and are the mind. When mind is there they are present. Absent of mind, absent of waking or dream.

True Self is not this body, nor this world; true self is the seer of both. The body may be moving within the world in waking/dream, but the true soul or self, seeing the changes. The body is born and lives within the waking/dream but true soul or self, remains as the witness of these changes. Soul or self is the Witness, the Awareness.

Seeker of truth should not imprison himself in his own creation by imagining the mind or ’I’ to be limited to the physical body. Just as space fills both inside and outside of bottle, so the true self or soul permeates the whole waking or dream.

One can't see the three states independently without the true soul or self. "Time, Space and Causation" are mental and present only in waking/dream. The essence of the three states themselves is consciousness alone. –FORMLESS PATH

  • Mysticism encourages people to be lazy, to think the external objects are created by Iswara and internal objects created by Jiva. Both Iswara and Jiva are man’s creation. Seeker of truth should not waste his time in talks of Jiva and Iswara disputes; rather inquire into the nature of soul. – FORMLESS PATH

  • There is no such thing as knowing the knower. That knowledge implies two factors, and the knower [soul/self] not being something to be seen, can never be known as such.

When one speaks of relation, one deals only with the known world within the waking/dream. When the known [waking/dream] goes, he says that because he actually sees the known [waking or dream] going; but he can never see the knower go. He can only say "he does not know" about it. One cannot speak of the known [three states] without the formless knower. But when the known [three states] has vanished, there is nothing to be said about the knower.

The act of conceiving in thought demands two factors. One cannot conceive the Formless Witness, the seer or knower, because he can say nothing about it, without making it an object. It cannot be pulled down to the level of an object, the seen.

The duality of formless witness and the seen[three states] is not the same as the duality of two things in the objective world within the waking/dream, for here both are known and seen, whereas there one is known; the formless witness remaining unknown and all one can say of it is "he cannot make any statement about it. It is incomprehensible.

“If formless witness disappears, as does the three states then one must posit another seer to replace it; but in fact no one has ever seen its disappearance. One never uses the word formless witness without the three states. It has no meaning apart from it. – FORMLESS PATH

  • Self is not a thing unknown to any one at any time. Let a man think. As soon as waking experience comes, there must be a knower there before in order to know that he is in waking experience.

The formless witness exists before the waking appears or the thing is seen; otherwise neither knowledge nor sensation could happen. The formless witness is always there. Even if one say it can be reached only at the end of a long path, it is impossible for it to be ever absent even while he says this.

The knower alone makes it possible for one to know anything at all. “Though, thus quite self-evident, easily known, quite near, forming the self, Atman appears, to the unenlightened mind as unknown, very remote, as though he were a separate thing. Those who do not look at the seer, the witness, and perceive it is the only thing that neither comes nor goes, are deluded, and turn outward towards things objective, which run away. – FORMLESS PATH

  • So long as one is ego bound he only runs from one object to another, from one idea to another, impermanent and unreal, he ignores the Atman and is ignorant. There is no time for them to think about the formless witness, since they are engrossed in their god, belief and their own accepted truth or materialistic life.

Soul in illusion is called mind! When illusion ceases, it sinks back as soul, which is in the form of consciousness. . The essence, the substance or material of the three states it consciousness the innermost self and innermost self is ultimate truth or Brahman.

  • Science is based on objects; its invention is based on object as subject. Thus the modern science can get the truth of objectified subject. Elimination of object mentally and realizing the subject then judging the worldview on the base of pure subject leads to discovery of ultimate truth.

The feelings and impressions and notions are based on the physical self. The scientific inventions are based on the physical self. Deeper inquiry, analysis and reasoning revels the fact that the physical self is false self within the false experience.

Modern science is the very opposite of the Gnani’s standpoint of view. Gnani says that a thing exists on the standpoint of the form as self and form ceases to exist without the formless self.

Therefore, it is necessary to know the fact that, the true self is not physical but the formless spirit, which we call it soul or self.

There is a need for sufficient distinction or discrimination has to be made between the witness and the witnessed. The witness is mixed and identified with what it witnessed and the result is doubts and confusion still prevailed without identifying the witness.

Personal feelings, ideas, judgments entered into the presentation of facts by the so called gurus and the whole mass passed as truth, the process often being given the high-sounding name of Intuition, Vision or Revelation which are mere fancy based on the physical self.

The religious idea of rewarding the virtuous and punishing the sinner in graded degrees are popular among the mass. These are some of the very well-known instances of pathetic fallacy, that is to say, introducing the element of personal sentiment in our appreciation of events and objects. Even today literate mass follow or observe these religious dogmas superstition and tradition.

    Witness and Witnessed

Science cuts itself from the witness and remains aloof from the witnessed. The scientist not only stands aside, outside the field of witness. It is because the scientist is unaware of the witness, is apart from the witnessed, and he and his invention are part of the witnessed. Therefore science cannot cross the threshold of the physical existence. Thus its invention is limited to physicality, which is part and parcel of the witnessed [universe or waking or mind] .
