Every person I have known including the so called enlightened, experience both; and they ward off pain and welcomes pleasure; don't you also do that ?
Have you come across anyone, who is indifferent to pleasure and pain; isn't such a person dead?
I heard Ramana Maharishi was like that; but I couldn't meet him.

The question is here is to understand the fact that, the pain and pleasure are created [duality] out of single stuff. Same as ornaments made out of gold is named as ring, necklace, bracelet, chain etc. But the substance of all these ornaments is gold. Therefore, this diversity in waking or dream created out of single stuff, which is consciousness [soul]. When we recognize the ornaments as gold then there is unity. When we recognize ornaments with its form and shapes then there is diversity. Same way when we recognize the consciousness [soul] with consciousness [soul] there is unity. When we recognized the consciousness [soul] with form and shapes there is diversity. When whole experience of diversity and non-diversity is made out of consciousness, therefore there is no second thing exists, other than consciousness [soul]. Hence it is non-dual. Knowing the self is formless frees the Self from experiencing the duality as reality. Therefore, there is a need to know the stuff from which the mind is made out of to unfold the mystery of the mind.
Sri, Ramana Maharishi, got operated without anesthesia or chloroform. For him physical existence was mere illusion. When one becomes aware the fact that, the self is not physical but the self is the formless spirit and his conviction becomes firm, the duality [pain and pleasure] becomes an object to the self [soul]. When self becomes naked from physical conditioning only the ultimate reality prevails.
