Yantra, mantra and tantra are
for the ignorant mass. In this modern
age people are capable of thinking deeply and assimilating and realizing ultimate
truth or Brahman. Thus we have to focus our attention on
acquiring self-knowledge. By dropping all this accumulated dross, which is
hindrance in realizing the ultimate truth or Brahman.
The illusion can
be understood only when the mind learns to view and judge the worldview, on the
true base. The orthodox non-duality has no truth.
Vedic religion
was modified and reintroduced with new add-ons
by Sri, Sankara a great Adavith Master to uplift the Vedic culture and
Santana Dharma [Hinduism], which were in ruins in the clutches of Buddhism. 18
puranas are introduced in the name of Veda Vyasa.
It indicates the
fact that somewhere someone has added the puranas in the name of Veda Vyasa the
grand master of Vedas. It is impossible to accept and believe that Veda Vyasa
authored and introduced puranas which has all conceptual gods because:-
In Vedas the God has been described as:-
Sakshi (Witness)
Chetan (conscious)
Nirguna (Without form and properties).
Nitya (eternal)
Shuddha (pure)
Buddha (omniscient)
Mukta (unattached).
It indicates clearly all the gods with form and attributes are
mere imagination based on the false self.
And also in Yajurved says:-
Translation 1.
They enter darkness, those who worship natural things (for
example air, water, sun, moon, animals, fire, stone, etc).
They sink deeper in darkness those who worship sambhuti.
(Sambhuti means created things, for example table, chair, idol etc.)
[Yajurved 40:9]
Translation 2.
"Deep into shade of blinding gloom fall asambhuti's
worshippers. They sink to darkness deeper yet who on sambhuti are intent."
[Yajurveda Samhita by Ralph T. H. Giffith pg 538]
Translation 3.
"They are enveloped in darkness, in other words, are
steeped in ignorance and sunk in the greatest depths of misery who worship the
uncreated, eternal prakrti -- the material cause of the world -- in place of
the All-pervading God, But those who worship visible things born of the
prakrti, such as the earth, trees, bodies (human and the like) in place of God
are enveloped in still greater darkness, in other words, they are extremely
foolish, fall into an awful hell of pain and sorrow, and suffer terribly for a
long time."
[Yajur Veda 40:9.]
So, Yajur Veda indicates that:-
They sink deeper in darkness those who worship sambhuti.
(Sambhuti means created things, for example table, chair, idol etc [Yajurved 40:9]
Those who worship visible things born of the prakrti, such as
the earth, trees, bodies (human and the like) in place of God are enveloped in
still greater darkness, in other words, they are extremely foolish, fall into
an awful hell of pain and sorrow, and suffer terribly for a long time." [Yajur Veda 40:9.]
When the religion of the
Veda knows no idols then why so many gods and goddesses with different form and
name are being propagated as Vedic gods. Why these conceptual gods are
introduced when Vedic concept of god is free from form and attributes.
Who introduced concept of god with attributes and attributeless
gods, when Yajur Veda says: - those who
worship visible things, born of the prakrti, such as the earth, trees, bodies
(human and the like), in place of God are enveloped in still greater darkness.
Therefore, all these add-ons proves that the form and attribute based concepts
are introduced by some sages of the past with new belief system and code of
conducts in the name of Vedas.
Sruti is made the final or exclusive authority in apara Vidya
and that for supporting the tenet of the CAUSAL relation or creatorship of
Brahman, Nirguna Brahman = the "Absolute beyond qualities," which can
be defined only in a negative way. For the Shankarian school = the Ultimate
Reality, higher than the Lord. i.e. of Saguna or apara Brahman ... The support
of Scriptural Revelation is, therefore, absolutely necessary for this
hypothesis of cosmology, this Saguna or apara (= inferior) Brahman, but not for
the absolute truth of Nirguna Brahman.
The Sruti itself says: "This Atma is NOT to be attained by a study
of the Vedas. [Katha Upanishad I, 2, 23.]
Therefore, all
the add-ons and attribute based knowledge, which are inferior, have to be
bifurcated and excluded to know the ultimate truth. The seeker of truth has to drop all the
inferior knowledge based on the attributes and go beyond Vedas to understand
assimilate and realize the ultimate truth or Brahman. The ultimate truth or Brahman itself is
god.
One has to go
beyond Vedas means go beyond religion. Go beyond religion means, go beyond
concept of god. Thus, going beyond Veda,
religion and conceptual god means going beyond illusion. That is end of Vedas [ Veda –antha]
When one goes
into the annals of the history it looks like the true Advith expounded by Sri
Sankara and his param guru, Goudpada was lost or mutilated by the orthodox,
because the preaching and practice does not match.
It is necessary for the seeker to do his
homework, and verify the validity of all the claims, rather than blindly
believe, what others expound as knowledge, till; the un-contradicted truth is
obtained.
The seeker must
have the courage of Buddha to accept the truth and reject the untruth. Since
Buddha rejected religion, idea of god and scriptures, therefore, it is evident
that, he has gone through every aspect and verified and found them to be
inadequate and useless for the pursuit of truth.
Even Buddhism is
mixed up with regional culture and traditions of the local religion, wherever
it existed. Thus to get the full essence from Buddhism is very difficult.
The scriptures
are for ignorant masses, who wholly accept the material world as it presents
itself. Wisdom is for those who have begun to realize that things are not what
they seem.
Each sect
concocts a God to suit its own purposes.
Such concocted Gods have no value in pursuit of truth. Man himself suggests that there must be a
God. It is an auto-suggestion.
Prayers and
sacrifices belong to a premature stage of development. However when no answers
come to prayers, struggle for existence presses man, and doubt arises
again. Faith in religion weakens as man
pays more attention to facts of life and this world.
Reason is the
common ground for whole humanity in modern age, whereas the appeal to
scriptural relations reaches only the sects.
Those who argue that truth is only in their religion are vain logicians,
depending on mere ideas, speculations and imaginations.
Truth is bitter
pill. It becomes very difficult for the seeker to accept it at first; because
of his inherited conditioning. Gradually he will be able to grasp it as he
moves on.
The illusion is
present only in ignorance where, 'I' and you are separate entity. In truth,
there is neither 'I' nor you, nor, the illusion. Therefore there is no
teaching, no teacher, and no student in reality.
Truth pursuit is
a very personal journey. Seeker has to verify minutely on his own, “what is
truth”, and “what is not truth”, before accepting anything as truth. The
illusion exists as reality, only on base of the ego, which is he false self
within the false experience.
For Gnani, who is
aware of the fact that the self is not physical but self is consciousness,
there is no illusion, even though; he is in the midst of illusion, because he
is fully aware of the fact that, all the three states are consciousness. Therefore he is conscious of consciousness in
the midst of illusion.
The language of
the duality, invented by the within the duality, for use in the dualistic
world, when used to describe non-duality, produces these apparent
contradictions, because there no apparatus in non-duality, because noting exist
other than the soul, which is in the form of consciousness.
Non duality is
the state of oneness of existence and there is no scope in its philosophy for
anything like non-existence.
Gaudapada’s rational
exposition of Advaita: - that whatever is seen,
whether external or internal, whether by the ordinary persons or yogis, is
unreal.
The essence of Mandukya's is: Do not be
satisfied with rituals, yoga etc. which are good in their own way, but inquire.
Inquire in to the nature of the mind. ? Brahman and Atman are things one can
never see. So seeker should not inquire into them. He has to inquire into the world around him,
which he can see. Analysis tells him it is passing away every second.
Everything is dying repeatedly. Where is it going? Thus he follows up his
investigation into what he can lay hands on. How can he inquire into Atman
which he cannot see? So first he must deal with the known and seen, this
inquiry leads up to the unknown in the end.
Mediocre minds waste their time on arguing
about unimportant matters. Accumulation of scriptural knowledge is dangerous in
pursuit of truth. Seeker has to establish in the truth of Non-duality by sheer
reasoning alone. Seeker has to begin by defining "What is real?"
"What is unreal?" etc, because that is the right way to discuss,
understand and assimilate self-knowledge.
Thus seeker has to remove all the hindrance in
order to acquire Self-knowledge.
According to Adavaita Vedanta, the
Veda addresses itself to two kinds of audiences - the ordinary ones who desire
the transitory heaven and other pleasures obtained as a result of ritual
sacrifices, and the more advanced seeker who seeks to know Brahman. Thus, the
purva mimam.sa, with its emphasis on the karma kanda of the Vedas, is meant for
the first audience, to help lead its followers along the way. However, the
Vedanta, with its emphasis on the jnana kanda, is meant for those who wish to
go beyond such transient pleasures.
An essential identity between Atman and Brahman is upheld in Advaita
Vedanta. The personality of Sri, Sankara and the force of Adavaita teaching is
so strong that most post-Sankaran schools of Vedanta consciously define their
doctrines against Advaita thought.
When Advaita declares Atman and Brahman then direct realization of
truth is possible without the scriptures.
Know the soul to be the true self. And true self is in the form of
consciousness and realize consciousness as ultimate truth or Brahman.
Upanishad
says:
This Ataman cannot be attained by the study of the
Vedas, or by intelligence, or by much hearing of sacred books. It is attained by him alone whom
It chooses. To such a one Ataman reveals Its own form. [Katha Upanishad Ch-II -23-P-20]
Mundaka Upanishad :-
This Ataman cannot be attained
through study of the Vedas, nor through intelligence, nor through much
learning. He who chooses Ataman—by him alone is Ataman attained. It is Ataman
that reveals to the seeker Its true nature. [ 3
–page-70 Mundaka Upanishad Upanishads by Nikilanada]
When the Upanishads say:-
It is
attained by him alone whom It chooses. To such a one Atman reveals its own
form. Then what is the use of indulging
through our intelligence or our accumulated knowledge, when one is not chosen
by the self, which is the soul, which is in the form of consciousness.
There is no
need for any philosophy in pursuit of truth because they take the seeker nearer
to truth but they create more doubts and confusions.
The scriptures and theories and teaching based on the ego are
not the yardstick. Using them as yardstick to understand and assimilate the
truth will lead one towards pursuit of arguments. Seeker of truth has to
discover on his own, the truth of his true existence by inquiring “what is
mind?” and “what is substance of the mind?” and move forward.
The ultimate
truth is one without the second, the one is not in the sense half or two, but
the one that remain forever One, without the second. The consciousness is all pervading. There is
no place where consciousness is not.
Consciousness is
in everyone, consciousness is in everything .consciousness is one behind many.
Consciousness alone is. It means the universe and its contents are the visible
form of consciousness. And consciousness in turn is invisible form of the universe,
which appears as mind.
Since people all are not aware of the fact
that, they are an experience within another experience [waking/dream]. The mind
is an experience, which contains everyone and everything and the universe.
Since one limits the mind to the physical entity, he forgets the fact that, his
body and the universe is an experience, within waking or dream experience. It
is impossible to unfold the mystery of his true existence without realizing the
fact that, the self is not physical but the self is consciousness. If the self is not physical then it is
erroneous to judge and conclude the truth on the base of the physical self or
ego. The ego [waking entity] is false
self within the false experience [waking]. Thus the truth has to be judges on
the base of the true self, which is formless consciousness which is not an
individual but it pervades all the three states as their formless substance and
witness.
Until and unless one rectifies the reasoning base
from form [ego] to formless [soul or consciousness], the ultimate truth
[Brahman] will not be revealed.
Sri, Sankara says in VivekaChudamani
:-
56.
Neither by Yoga, nor by Sankhya, nor by work, nor by learning, but by the realization of one's identity with Brahman is Liberation possible, and by no
other means.
58.
Loud speech consisting of a shower of words, the skill in expounding the
Scriptures, and likewise erudition - these merely bring on a little personal
enjoyment to the scholar, but are no good for Liberation.
59.
The study of the Scriptures is useless so long as the highest Truth is unknown,
and it is equally useless when the highest Truth has already been known.
60.
The Scriptures consisting of many words are a dense forest which merely causes
the mind to ramble. Hence men of wisdom should earnestly set about knowing the
true nature of the Self.
61.
For one who has been bitten by the serpent of Ignorance, the only remedy is the
knowledge of Brahman. Of what avail are the Vedas and (other) Scriptures,
Mantras (sacred formulae) and medicines to such a one?
62.
A disease does not leave off if one simply utter the name of the medicine,
without taking it; (similarly) without direct realization one cannot be
liberated by the mere utterance of the word Brahman.
63.
Without causing the objective universe to vanish and without knowing the truth
of the Self, how is one to achieve Liberation by the mere utterance of the word
Brahman? — It would result merely in an effort of speech.
65.
As a treasure hidden underground requires (for its extraction) competent
instruction, excavation, the removal of stones and other such things lying
above it and (finally) grasping, but never comes out by being (merely) called
out by name, so the transparent Truth of the self, which is hidden by Maya and
its effects, is to be attained through the instructions of a knower of Brahman,
followed by reflection, meditation and so forth, but not through perverted
arguments.
66.
Therefore the wise should, as in the case of disease and the like, personally
strive by all the means in their power to be free from the bondage of repeated
births and deaths.
67.
The question that thou hast asked today is excellent, approved by those versed
in the Scriptures, aphoristic, pregnant with meaning and fit to be known by the
seekers after Liberation.
That
is why Sri Sankara, indicated in
Bhaja Govindam says: - [Jnana Viheena
Sarva Mathena Bajathi na Muktim janma Shatena] - one without knowledge does not obtain liberation even in a hundred
births, no matter which religious faith he follows.
Thus it
proves the religion is not the means to self-realization.
When Upanishad itself declares:- sarvam khalvidam brahma - all this (universe) is verily Brahman.
By following back all of the relative appearances in the world, we eventually
return to that from which it is all manifest – the non-dual reality [ Chandogya Upanishad].
Then it is no use
going roundabout way, trace the Brahman which is the formless substance and witness
of the universe, which is in the form of mind.
By tracing the source of the mind or universe one will be able to
realize the Brahman.
Thus, self-knowledge is meant only for those who have intense urge, and
courage to accept the truth with humility and reject the untruth. Since people
start comparing with their scriptural knowledge, it becomes impossible to
assimilate and realize the non-dual truth. Therefore, there is no
need to convince anyone other than our own-selves to get the firm conviction.
The religion and yoga
are based on the false self. The orthodoxy believes the experience of birth, life,
death and the world as reality whereas Sri, Sankara declares the world is myth.
Brahman alone is real and everything is Brahman. Deeper self-search
revels the fact that Sri, Sankara’s declaration is very truth but to realize
the Brahman or ultimate truth the orthodoxy is greatest hurdle. Since people
are stuck sentimentally stuck with orthodoxy they take imagination oriented
hallucinated path of karma.
The individual is
false self within the false experience.
Thus conduct and actions performed as an individual within the falsehood
will not yield fruits. Thus it is
necessary to realize the fact that, the self is not the form but the self is
formless and reject all theories based on the form in order to realize the
ultimate truth.
Ish Upanishad declares: - Those people who have neglected the
attainment of Self-knowledge and have thus committed suicide
10/11/12
Those people who have neglected the attainment of Self-knowledge and have thus committed suicide, as it were, are doomed to enter those worlds after death.
This is a
condemnation of people who do not try to attain Self-knowledge. They are, in a
real sense, committing suicide, for what can be worse than being a slave to
sense enjoyment, completely oblivious of the real purpose of life, which is to
be your own master? In order to be your own master you have to realize that you
are identical with Atman, the true Self, that you are Pure Consciousness, ever
free, without name and form, and unconditioned.
You are not
subject to any modification, without beginning and end, beyond thought and
speech. You are Existence Absolute, Knowledge Absolute, Bliss Absolute. When you
know this you are free. You no longer swing between birth and death. If you do
not try to know who you really are, you are indeed committing suicide. You are inviting
the ignominy of a slave's life in this world and a similarly unfortunate fate
after death. The Self, is one without a second, complete in itself.
It never moves. It is always still, always the
same, yet it moves faster than the mind. It is the power that moves everything,
and it makes the whole world go the way it does. It gives those who
mechanically perform sacrifices [avidya] go into darkness that is like being
blind. But those who merely worship gods and goddesses [vidya] go into a deeper
darkness. [IX]
"Blinding
darkness' here implies ignorance. And those who worship gods and goddesses go
into a deeper darkness because they seek rewards for their worship. As long as
there is the sense of "I' and "mine' within us, there can be no
Self-knowledge. When you say "me' and "mine' you automatically
identify yourself with your body-mind complex. This shows that you are ignorant
of your real Self, which is Pure Consciousness and which is also the Self of
all. The sign of an ignorant person is
in the way he uses the words "I' and "mine'. He says: "I am so
and so. I own this much property,' and so on.
An ignorant
person has many desires in his mind, and because of these desires he is born
again and again. He has to have a body; otherwise he cannot satisfy his
desires. But the more he tries to satisfy them, the more they grip his mind.
This goes on endlessly. But it is given to a human being to think, reason, and
discriminate. Thus he soon comes to realize that the path he has been following
cannot give him peace of mind. He understands that he has to choose another
path the path of renunciation. As long as he does not practice renunciation, he
gropes in the dark like a blind man and he suffers.
There are two
types of such people who grope in the dark. One type worships avidya
(ignorance) that is, they mechanically perform the prescribed sacrifices without
any thought as to why they are doing them. No wonder they grope in the dark.
They are doomed unless someday the truth dawns on them that to save themselves
they must seek Self-knowledge.
Worse, however,
is the situation of the other type those who worship vidya. The word vidya ¸
usually means "knowledge', but here it is used to mean "gods and
goddesses'. Some people worship gods and goddesses so that they may someday
attain the same status. They may get their desire fulfilled, but this will only
delay their liberation. That is why the Upanisad says that they will be in
deeper darkness.
Scholars say that
the path of avidya [performing aganihotra and other sacrifices] and the path of
vidya [worshipping gods and goddesses] produce different results. Wise men
confirm this. [X]
Vidya and avidya
both are hindrances to Self-knowledge, but vidya is even worse than avidya. The
word vidya is used here in a special sense; here it means worshipping gods and
goddesses. By worshipping gods and goddesses you will go after death to the world
of gods and goddesses. But will that help you? The time you spend there is
wasted, because if you were not there you could have spent that time moving
forward towards Self-knowledge, which is your goal. In the world of gods and
goddesses you cannot do that, and thus you go deeper and deeper into darkness.
Avidya is karma
and therefore a hindrance. You perform avidya - i.e., you perform Agnihotra and
other sacrifices. This is a roundabout way of purifying the mind, and it is
also groping in the dark. But it may not have as heavy a toll on your time and
energy as the other.
A Gnani is free
from experiencing the illusion [body + universe] as reality, he is fully aware
of the fact that, his body and his experience of the world as consciousness,
which is ultimate truth.
People who are
incapable to inquire and reason are tending to follow some philosophy without
verification. Therefore the more ignorant they are the easier to get them into
a religious fold. Religion is so strong and popular because it makes no demand
on the intelligent; it simply requires belief in guru and his teachings.
It never strikes
believer to doubt whether his inherited belief system is true. They never use
their reason because they start and conclude that their belief system alone is true, because they never question
the validity of their inherited belief.
For religion one
can interpret texts as he likes, in whatever way that pleases him, he simply
imagine away. The idea of god injected
in the past and inherited by people and they refuse to verify the facts,
because they think it blasphemy even to question their inherited belief
system.
In pursuit of
truth the ultimate truth has to be proved, not assumed. Pundits who take
scriptures for granted are not Gnanis.
Pundits teach
that all is your-self, but none of them can show that this is so, none has analyzed it scientifically, and none can prove it. Rational proof is needed, so
that one arrive at knowing truth i.e. wisdom; punditry is mere dogma,
parrotism, repetition of what they read in scripture. Scriptures are not
yardstick and scriptural truth is not proof.
Pundits take scriptures as authority.
Authoritarianism merely assumes as true what another says, but what has
yet to be proved.
Pundits have to
test truth in this world not in the next world.
There is no proof other than blind belief based on the scriptures,
belief is not truth. So, doctrines are
not the means to realize the ultimate truth. There is no need to follow them.
Gaudapada says: - the merciful Veda teaches karma and upaasana to people of lower
and middling intellect, while jnana is taught to those of higher intellect.
So they clearly indicate rituals and theories are not meant for
those who are searching for the higher knowledge or wisdom. The path of wisdom is the only means.
All the orthodox Advaitins indulge and immersed themselves in
ritualistic oriented life style and follow the path of karma and upasana which
is meant for lower and middling intellect and not
for realizing the Advaitic truth. Many
chose these orthodox scholars as their gurus. But these gurus are good to learn
the conceptual Advaita meant for those orthodox who believe their conduct
oriented life style leads to Moksha [liberation]. But religious based Advaita is not the means to acquire self –knowledge or non-dual wisdom. Those who are seeking
truth have to do their own homework in order to acquire self-knowledge.
Doubts and
Confusions arise when seeker finds the scriptures and yoga are inadequate or
useless to quench his spiritual thirst.
Disappointments in religion or yoga or even science imply error or
ignorance.
When serious
seeker reaches a stage with all his baggage of accumulate knowledge, then
uncertainty haunts him. Whether he is
right?" Where is the certainty that he is proceeding on right lines?"
Thus doubts arise and the inquiring spirit comes and impels to search elsewhere
for truth where it will not be possible even to have doubt. The test is
therefore in experience. And only in non-duality, where there are no two to
argue about views or to have difference of opinion can such doubtlessness be
possible. Belief depends upon unstable
bases whereas certainty depends on proof.
Seeker of truth
has to get rid of his doubts through deeper inquiry, analysis and reasoning on
his own, to realize the fact that, the self is not the form but self is
formless. Thus his analysis and reasoning has to be based on the formless not
on the form. By simply go on believing
and accepting whatever said by the punditry will not lead one towards path of
wisdom. All the doubt has to be got rid of "by the sword of Self -
Knowledge." The scriptures, yoga
are not necessary if one follows the inner [formless] path. Religion and yoga are not the means to path
of wisdom.
They alone in this world are endowed with the
highest wisdom who are firm in their conviction of the sameness and
birthlessness of Atman. The ordinary man does not understand their way. [Chapter IV — Alatasanti Prakarana
95-P-188 in Upanishads by Nikilanada]
This passage
indicates the fact that everything is Atman/spirit. The one who views and
judges the worldview on the base of his birth /body will not realize the fact
that, the man including the world is created sustained and finally dissolves as Atman. Thus Atman alone is, and all else is mirage.
Thus
self-knowledge is the aim of every human being. Since everyone thinks the physical
body is the self, their aim is misdirected and they focus their attention on
materiality which makes one feel the duality [waking] as reality.
Self-Knowledge is the aim of every
human being. Since everyone thinks the physical body is the self their aim is
misdirected and they focus their attention on materiality which makes one feel
the duality [waking] as reality.
Therefore there is no need to study
scriptures, or indulge in god and guru glorification or performing religious
rituals. Since, they are not the means
to acquire non-dual wisdom. It is only waste of time and effort to indulge in
those things.
The individual self is not real, is not accepted by many. The non-dual wisdom is based not on the
individual self [ego]. Until people hold
the ‘I’ [ego] as witness, they will not reach the ultimate understanding.
